broadband sharing....

ok here we go...
3 pc's need to share an ntl broadband connection... so i was thinking can i put the broadband into one of the pc's and have a network of the 3 pc with a hub/switch and get the other two to use the net from the one with the broadband.... the one that will have the broadband has win 98 and the others are win xp.... and if this is possible can you please tel me all the setting and how to implement this as last time i tryed to network 98 and xp it took ages and was an arse to setup.

i really need details here as the pc's im setting up belong to my girlfriends dad and its not a good time in our relationship to waste his money and screw it up. thanks in advance for any help.

The easiest way would be with a Router. How much distance separates the Computers?

I use a DiLink Router with built in Switch...easy installation.
All the run on broadband.No inperticular pc has to be on-line,
any one of the pc's can access the internet via the Router.
You can create the Network with the PC's sharing the Files and Printer or you choose to not share.
I have the Host PC locked down...no access except Printer,the printer being set as Shared.
The other PC's on the Network are FULL share as this gives me access to the PC's via the Host computer.
With this type of Router the Host PC must be on in order for other users on the Network to access the Printer.

Some Routers have a Built-In Print Server which means users could access the printer without the Host PC on.

You don't have to create a Network,with the Router just plug in your PC,config the IP and your on-line.

the computers are within reach for any kinda of network or cable connection.. thing is by setting one pc as internet server im hopping to not have to set up the broadband software on all pc's... this is because one of the pc's the laptop is a goverment pc which is used for my girlfriends dads work and hes not allowed to install unatherised software.... also the modem for broadband is from ntl... would i be able to change it to a rounter/switch thingy.... cheers

Does that Computer have an Ethernet or NIC Card installed?
You only install the Modem software on the main Computer that is connected directly to it. The others would connect to the Router only and need no additional software.

ok thats what im asking.. can i link all the pc's laptops up by nic lan cards etc and then have one connected to the net sharing that braodband connection....... if so how do i do it and what settings do i need to setup.... the pc's are all either win 98 or win xp... i assume they have to be 98se not 98.... thanks

I use Linksys EtherFast® Cable/DSL Router with 4-Port Switch. (link below)
Supports DHCP, Universal Plug-and-Play (UPnP), and includes a user-friendly Setup Wizard for easy configuration.

All 3 comp need NIC cards. Use client for microsoft network. File and print sharing settings. Windows uses information to identify your computer on a network. You will need name for comp,the workgroup it will appear in and (optional)a description of the comp. all 3 comp will be set the same. You can find these settings in the properties of network neighborhood under the identifications tab. connecting the computers via cat5 to the router , router to the dsl modem or whatever you are using.
