disk defragmenter

Postby caboosejjs » Wed Apr 14, 2004 3:09 am

I have been getting very irrated while running the windows defragmenter on a few machines. It keeps telling me that there has been activity on the drive and needs to restart. One time going to over %90. I think this means just meanst that there is a terminate and stay program screwing things up in the background. I just want to know if anyone has an easy fix that would allow a smooth sailing defragment. such as running in safemode? can anyone advice me?

Try running it in Safe Mode. This is pretty common with the Windows defrag utility in Windows 98.

You can also hit CTRL+ALT+DEL
In here shutdown:
Ccapp
Msnmsgr
Loadqm
Rundll32

Keep:
Explorer
Systray
Type32(keyboard)
Then run defrag START>RUN,type defrag

You could post whats in there.

My 2cents

Postby Digital_DNA » Fri Apr 16, 2004 8:04 am

This problem is very common with win98 and ME. I would certainly try Ranger Bobs suggestion first. I have a couple other options for you.

1.) Make sure you don't have your screen saver set to turn on. I have run into cases where people don't realize that they have it set because they are never away from their computer long enough for it to activate.

2.) Disable virtual memory. In my experience this is the number one cause for defragmenter not completing. What happens is: the swap file gets so big that disk defragmenter doesn't know what to do with it. To solve this problem you need to enter your virtual memory setting and specify your own settings then disable it until you finish with the defragmentation. I have a document explaining the process in detail. If you would like I can email it to you.

Try Ranger Bob's suggestion first. Good luck.. Let me know if you would like me to email the virtual memory document to you..

I'll agree to that...try Bob's idea first.
As for playing with Virtual Memory, that is NOT a good idea.
Your making it way more difficult.
Especialy for home users.

Just get . It doesn't restart when it hits open programs, etc. It runs in the background. I got it a few months ago and I love it. You don't need to bother with safe mode or any of that.
