HELP! Computer shuts down after scandisk ends!

Postby Mooservd » Fri Apr 09, 2004 5:46 pm

My computer refuses to load windows when I start it.

First I get the following message:
One or more of your drives may have developed bad sectors. Press any key to run Scandisk with surface analysis on these drives...

So I press a key and it goes to the regular scandisk screen.

But at 49% it says Scandisk detected an invalid long filename entry on this drive and was unable to fix it. To fix this problem run Scandisk for Windows.

I press OK and it continues until at 85% it tells me Scandisk is searching Drive C for crosslinked files.

At this point Scandisk stops and I get the following:
Scandisk cannot continue because ther is no more free space on Drive C. To finish making repairs, quit Scandisk and then free some space on Drive C. Then, run Scandisk again.

Once again I press OK and everything seems to be alright. The next screen says: There was an error running Scandisk.exe, or it was canceled. Run Scandisk for Windows, as you may still have errors on your disk(s). Press any key to continue starting Windows...

This is where I believe the problem is. I press a key and then this appears under the previous error message:
C:\WINDOWS\INIT.EXE

C:\WINDOWS\COMMAND\SCANDISK.EXE

e h i k l m n o p q r s t u v w x y z {|} ~ ⌂ Ć ù ė ì â ä à å ẽ ë è ï

Press any key to continue.

That's when it shuts down and it won't go past this. It's been like this for 2 days and I honestly have no clue what's going on.

I have a 600Mhz Intel Celeron HP Pavilion 6730 with Windows 98.

Any help would be great and if not, I guess it's off to be Reformatted. Thanks.

Have you tried going into DOS and executing the command scandisk/r?
