specifying a new default email client

Postby spartacus » Sat Feb 28, 2004 7:49 pm

HI -

Have a real frustrater to sort out. I use outlook 2000 (have just updated it from the microsoft update place) and i want to select it as my default email client. Basically each time i click an instant email button on a website or from the 'send to' menu, outlook express comes up, even though i have uninstalled it as a windows component.
I am running Win 2000 professional on an Athlon XP2600 processor. There is an icon for set program access and defaults in the start menu however this does not offer me the chance to change the default program - I REALLY NEED TO KNOW HOW TO DO THIS!!!

PLease Help

Best Regards

Try Internet Explorer / Tools / Internet Options / Programs Tab / Set your Defaults there.

i have tried this and this works fine.

I am still not satisfied that there is not a problem though. If i click the 'send mail' button on the top of my browser window (IE 6) Microsoft Office 2000 asks for a CD to update iutself and when i insert the CD the installer dfails to find the file even though if i explore the CD i can find it no problem. I have also tried copying the entire CD to hard disk in an attempt to install from hard disk but the copying of files fails.

I dont think it is my drive cos my DVD/CD rom plays DVD's and I can usually install no problem from therert and my CDRW drive writes and reads no problems....

Any Suggestions would be very helpful!!???

Once again, Best regards

Have you tried repairing Office through Add/Remove Programs?
Have you updated Office from the Microsoft Windows Update site?

RE:

Upgrade to 2003? Don't understand... Did you pay for it?
Also, if you'd reply in your post you'd get more than me helping and we'd see your history.
brad

I reckon i worked out whats going on... Dunno the thoughts/opinions of peeps on PCTECH FORUMS but at the risk of alienation....

I got a copy [*gasp!] of Office 2000 and attempted to upgrade via the Microsoft Update website - i think they must have cottoned on to this when the update was installed and since my CD and office, particularly outlook, has given me untold problemos!!
Searching my add remove programs, I couldn't find an entry for the update, and so have uninstalled Office 2000...

Incidentally, what are the general opinions of folk on this board about copied/cracked software? Perhaps i`ll post this on the general discussion board too!!

Cheers again for the suggestions

Alright mate,

I dont understand the answer to the second quoted question!! :?:

[quote ..."where the hell do i find C:\Documents and Settings......\Local Settings\...? I know it exists because thats where i found my old *.pst files but i cant find them anywhere now and doing a search of my whole C drive turns up nothing!!!..."]

I have found out how i get there now. Using Win 2000, if i go to C:\Documents and settings, my actual user name doesn't appear as a folder - only two folders appear, (Administrator and All Users), however if i manually type in my user name as a folder directory, i enter a directory with several more folders present, (Application Data, Cookies, Desktop, Favourites, My Documents, Send To, Start Menu). Again, if i type in manually Local Settings i enter another folder (which wasn't visible) and am into a directory containing the folders History, Temp and Temporary Interenet Files.

How can these files exist without me seeing them and to what depth does this unseen file structure go? I am especially interested as the Search tool from the start menu does not find these files, even thogh they are present on my system and hold information that i need to get at e.g. to update outlook 2003.

What is it all about?!!
Best Regards

My point was that if you uninstalled MSOffice, as you said, the .pst files wouldn't be there.
As for the other, have you gone to Windows Explorer / Tools / Folder Options / Check "Show Hidden Files and Folders" and uncheck both "Hide extensions for known file types" and "Hide protected Operating System Files"?
