back on decent internet again

Postby liljim » Wed Feb 04, 2009 4:36 am

Its not the best but im now on EVDO through alltell wireless. I get just over a meg down and around 256 up and ping google at 150. I pinged it at 1200+ on satellite. Still dont know about any gaming with that latency but i'll be testing it out soon.

No i didnt Gecko, i chickened out. I bought one of . Its a small usb modem that uses Alltel wireless 3g internet. Its basically cellular internet access. Im using that modem with an external wilson antenna thats on my roof.

I played COD 5 this morning without any problems. I averaged about a 160 ping to the server i was on. Thats pushing it but i didnt seem to have any lag and even snuck a few kills in.

What games do i own, wow. Most all of them!

COD 2 ,4 and 5
Ghost Recon all expansions
Ghost Recon Advanced Warfighter
F.E.A.R. all expansions (and soon fear 2!)
Neverwinter Nights all expansions
Neverwinter Nights 2
Hellgate London
Turning Point
Mass Effect
Crysis
Company of Heros

and it goes on and on

I'm kind of glad to hear that you didn't put up the tower.
It would be a huge lightning rod right in your yard, along with the chance of hurricanes I think it was wise to "chicken out".

Also good to hear that you can actually game on your new connection.

everything above scared me, also would have been around 20ft from a power line and in the flight path of crop dusters that spray the fields surrounding me.

new connection is doing good, played call of duty 4 pretty smooth until my antivirus started updating in the middle of a game. Lagged for a minute then picked back up.

The most important thing is that i dont have a bandwidth cap so far. Verizon bought out the company im with and impose a 5 gig per month limit on their service but im suppose to be free of that for 2 years.

5 gig per month limit,
I have never setup anything to track all of our bandwidth usage, but between doing web sites, downloads and two teenage daughters with their own computers, it has got to be at least 100-150 gigs in a month if not more.

Reportedly Comcast has a 250 gig per month limit, I have never received any notice from them, so far so good.

i had a 4 gig limit on the satellite, completely unreasonable. I have a 2 year contract now so i assume i'll be unlimited until then. Hopefully by then i'll have bought a new house and moved to a location with better options. 250 gigs per month is realistic, i could cross 4 within a week just browsing around youtube.
