New PC HDD clone from old PC IDE to SATA

Postby Harold1066 » Tue Jan 27, 2009 9:34 pm

hi i am upgrading the family pc which i built about three or four years ago ..it has a ASUS K8S-MX motherboard which has both ide and sata connectors ..there is one IDE hdd installed ....when i purchase / build another pc i will be using SATA ( 300mps ) HDD drive/s ..

i would like to clone my existing IDE drive onto a new SATA drive for use in a new PC .After reading the ASUS Motherboard manual and ASUS website it is not clear if I can use both types of drive in the same machine at the same time ....if this is possible it would make the upgrade much smoother ..as all the settings and accounts and programs configurations will be preserved .

My OS is linux ( SUSE Linux Enterprise Desktop 10 )

thanks

Hello Harold1066, and welcome to our forum.

From what I have read at Asus you will need to update the BIOS to at least Version 1017 its near the bottom of the BIOS history link.
http://support.asus.com/download/downlo ... &type=BIOS

Then you should then be able to clone the sata drive using the sata drive's install cd that came with it. It should have a cloning feature that is not OS dependent.
