Dell Inspiron 6000

Postby martyrobson » Sat Jan 10, 2009 8:15 pm

Hi, I am new to the forums. I have a Dell Inspiron 6000 laptop and recently the monitor has stopped working.

I have a Samsung tv which I currently use as a monitor, as the laptop’s one doesn’t work.

When booting the laptop, the monitor turns on fine, and works for about 30 seconds before it just cuts out to blank. I want to do a clean install on the laptop soon, but am worried as the set-up for the clean install doesn’t appear on the Samsung tv, leaving me with 30 seconds to set up the windows clean install (which i am not comfortable with).

I thought maybe it had something to do with the battery so i took the battery out but the problem still persists. I placed the laptop on custom stilts to allow maximum air flow in case it’s over heating, but this made no difference either.

Is there anything anyone can recommend me? I don’t really understand why it works for only 30 odd seconds. Surly if it works for the first 30 seconds it is in working order?

The laptop functions fine on the Samsung monitor and this is how i wish to use it after the clean install.

If any more information is needed please request it.

As for how this happened, it literally just one day stopped working. Naturally i thought the whole laptop was broken, but as i said it works fine on the tv.

Thank you in anticipation, Martin.

Hello martyrobson and welcome to our forum.

Have you tried Adjusting Brightness by pressing <Fn> and the up- or down-arrow key on the keyboard?
Have you tried Switching the Video Image by pressing <Fn>+<F8> to switch the video image to the display only or the display and the external device simultaneously?

Hi Gecko

I didn’t think to try ‘function f8’ whilst the laptop wasn’t in XP. During XP Install I was in fact able to display the diagnostic interface on the Samsung TV and I was able to do a clean install.

Since I have a clean XP Install I bought a usb keyboard. I have hidden the Laptop out of site, so effectively the laptop is being used as a desktop.

Thanks for your help
Martin
