whistle noise on windows boot up

Postby robbro » Sat Dec 20, 2008 11:50 am

Hi Guys,

Anyone ever had a problem where on windows boot up just as you start login in scree on windows vista you hear a whistle noise? it lasts till my pc has booted up then a few secs after that.

I am wondering if its my PSU on full load or something else - i say my PSU because i have the new case and have all the fans connected to it (8 fans in total).

Hi Robbro

I think that you are over doing it with fans. There is at least one fan in the Power supply, one on the CPU and usually a vent fan. Plus some of the Video cards have fans too.

Basically a computer is a glorified dust filter. 8 Fans will certainly clean the air very nicely. If you have any pets, cat fur usually gets to the video card fan right away.

The whistling noise could be the CPU fan warming up. When you turn them on, it takes a few minutes for them to get up to speed and balance out. That's usually a sign of age, it's time to be replaced.

I wouldn't rule out the load factor of 8 fans starting up, that is quite a drain on boot. Plus with that much juice going through the motherboard, your USB peripherals might act flakey.

Open up the case when its off and start it up. The souce of the noise should be more pronounced. It could be unsecured wiring hitting a fan

Hi Icecube,

Thank you kindly for your reply :) - I am sure its not my CPU fan as its pretty new (around 3/4 months old) My case is also new so i know its not the dust causing the trouble.

Ill have a tinker around my case and disconnect any fans i don't really need maybe the noise will not happen on boot up then. Thanks again for your help :).

Rob why don’t you try the simple process of elimination. just unplug one thing at a time, boot up. unplug another thing, boot up. etc etc, that’s probably the easiest way your going to find out what it is.

Doesn’t sound like you are having much luck atm does it!
