Can I safely delete .rdb files?

Postby buttsmacca » Fri Mar 28, 2008 2:15 am

Hi,
I have several .RDB files in C drive under System Volume Information/_restore{7FCE823d.......}/ then several folders named RP12 to RP 36.

I'm pretty sure each folder represents a snapshot of the system as it was at the time the file/folder was created, for restore purposes. So essentially, would it be safe to delete the oldest folders and just keep the most recent one/s? Would I ever need the older folders? Or am I completely wrong here?

Please help!

buttsmacca,

You are correct about .rdb files being snapshots of you system changes.
However I would not recommend just arbitrarily deleting the older one.

If you are concerned about the amount of HDD space used for system restore you would be much better off letting windows manage it for you.

Right click on My Computer and select properties > System restore tab > Settings button > now just use the slider to adjust the amount of HDD space used by the system restore.

Thanks Gecko! That worked perfectly.

Another question if I may. I'm using WinDirStat to visually check where all my hard drive is being used. It tells me that I have a rather large "unknown" file directly under my C drive about 2.3Gb's in size. I've looked at all hidden and system files but can't find anything. Any idea what kind of hidden file in that location could be so big?
