Tharrick,

Download and save it to your Desktop.

Double click SDFix.exe and it will extract the files to %systemdrive%
(Drive that contains the Windows Directory, typically C:\SDFix)

Please then reboot your computer in Safe Mode by doing the following :

* Restart your computer
* After hearing your computer beep once during startup, but before the Windows icon appears, tap the F8 key continually;
* Instead of Windows loading as normal, the Advanced Options Menu should appear;
* Select the first option, to run Windows in Safe Mode, then press Enter.
* Choose your usual account.

* Open the extracted SDFix folder and double click RunThis.bat to start the script.
* Type Y to begin the cleanup process.
* It will remove any Trojan Services and Registry Entries that it finds then prompt you to press any key to Reboot.
* Press any Key and it will restart the PC.
* When the PC restarts the Fixtool will run again and complete the removal process then display Finished, press any key to end the script and load your desktop icons.
* Once the desktop icons load the SDFix report will open on screen and also save into the SDFix folder as Report.txt
(Report.txt will also be copied to Clipboard ready for posting back on the forum).
* Finally paste the contents of the Report.txt back on the forum with a new HijackThis log

Please download and save it to your Desktop.

* Close all other windows before proceeding.
* Double-click on dss.exe and follow the prompts.
* When it has finished, dss will open two Notepads main.txt and extra.txt -- please copy (CTRL+A and then CTRL+C) and paste (CTRL+V) the contents of main.txt and extra.txt in your next reply.

Double clicking RunThis.bat causes a blue window to flash for less than half a second before closing and then nothing else happens

Tharrick,

This infection is being stubborn being on vista makes it even harder to remove so lets try a different tool.

Please download and save it to your desktop.

Double-click VundoFix.exe to run it.
When VundoFixopens, click the Scan for Vundo button.
Once it's done scanning, click the Remove Vundo button.
You will receive a prompt asking if you want to remove the files, click YES
Once you click yes, your desktop will go blank as it starts removing Vundo.
When completed, it will prompt that it will reboot your computer, click OK.

Note: It is possible that VundoFix encountered a file it could not remove.
In this case, VundoFix will run on reboot, simply follow the above instructions starting from "Click the
Scan for Vundo button." when VundoFix appears at reboot.

After the reboot(s) post a new Hijackthis log in your reply.

Tharrick,

This is the old way to remove a vundo infection, I'm going to see if we can use it to delete the files that are causing the troubles.

Please copy this to Notepad and print it. Make sure to work through the fixes in the exact order it is mentioned below. If there's anything that you don't understand, ask your question(s) before proceeding with the fixes.

Please download to your desktop.
Extract the folder to your desktop.
After the files are extracted, please reboot your computer into Safe Mode.

Restart Windows after you see the BIOS screen and before Windows starts to load.
Start tapping the F8 key. The Windows Advanced Options Menu appears.
Use the Arrow key to ensure that the Safe Mode option is selected.
Press Enter. The computer then begins to start in Safe mode.

Once in safe mode go to My Computer-> Tools/View-> Folder Options-> View tab and make sure that 'Show hidden files and folders' is enabled. Also make sure that Display the contents of System Folders' is checked. Remember to reset these when done.
Delete the following Files/Folders if they exist:
C:\Windows\system32\vtstu.ini
C:\Windows\system32\vtstu.ini1
C:\Windows\system32\vtstu.dll

Now open the KillVundo folder and doubleclick on KillVundo.bat

(1)You will first be presented with a warning,it should look like this:
VundoFix V2.13 by Atri
By using VundoFix you agree that you are doing so at your own risk
Press enter to continue....

At this point press Enter one time.

(2)Next you will see:
Type in the filepath as instructed by the forum staff
Then Press Enter, Then F6, Then Enter Again to continue with the fix.

At this point please type the following file path (make sure to enter it exactly as below!):
C:\Windows\system32\windows
Press Enter, then press the F6 key, then press Enter one more time to continue with the fix.

(3)Next you will see:
Please type in the second filepath as instructed by the forum staff
Then Press Enter, Then F6, Then Enter Again to continue with the fix.

At this point please type the following file path (make sure to enter it exactly as below!):
C:\Windows\system32\vtstu.exe
Press Enter, then press the F6 key, then press Enter one more time to continue with the fix.

(4)The fix will run then HijackThis will open.
In HiJackThis, please place a check next to thefollowing items and click FIX CHECKED:

F3 - REG:win.ini: load=C:\Windows\system32\vtstu.exe
O23 - Service: Microsoft cache control (MSControlService) - Unknown owner - C:\Windows\system32\windows

After you have fixed these items, close Hijackthis and Press any key to Force a reboot of your computer.
Pressing any key will cause a "Blue Screen of Death" this is normal, do not worry!
Once your machine reboots please continue with the instructions below.

Empty all your TEMP Folders, Temporary Internet Files Folder and then empty your Recycle Bin, reboot again.

Post a new HiJackThis log and the vundofix.txt file from the KillVundo folder into this thread.

Well, it's been a while, and I've decided to just bite the bullet and reformat (I'd decided a little while back that if the fix we were trying through PMs didn't work, I'd just reformat). I managed to salvage important documents (like my uni coursework - I'd be spitting bullets if I'd lost chunks of my thesis that I hadn't backed up yet...)
Cheers for trying to help, though.

I just wish I had a spare copy of XP lying around :( Not so sure I want to be reinstalling Vista after this episode. I've reported the incident to Microsoft, and am just hoping they take it on board for SP1.

Tharrick,

I'm sorry that we were not able to repair your system.
Combofix just does not run well on some Vista systems.

I am glad that you were able to backup you important files before your format.
