Using Laptop hard disk in desktop

Postby Jazzman » Wed Dec 19, 2007 2:05 am

Hi all! Hope everyone's good.

I'm considering amalgamating my 2 pcs into 1. My desktop's hard drive is old, slow, VERY LOUD and small capacity, and the OS is buggy - its generally shagged out. I want to use the hard disk from my laptop which is quiet, big and has nice legal windows on it.

What part/s would I need to make a laptop hard disk compatible with with a desktop miniATX case? And will doing this lead to hardware issues as the hard disk is expecting the hardware of the laptop but will find its all different?

Also There is no supplied windows disk, so if i move the hard disk to the desktop will it notice the hardware changes and refuse to function? I've heard that with these pre-loaded windows hard disks you can only change a few hardware components before they stop working (I'm basing this on the presumption that its OEM windows loaded on the laptop, but i could be wrong? I dont know).

Sorry this is windows orientated - but as it has a hardware question too, i thought I'd put it here. To clarify, the windows is XP.

Many thanks

Possible, yes but as Gecko said you would have to have a Windows disk. You can use a 3 1/2" to 2 1/2" ide adapter.
