Windows cannot access the specified device, path, or file. ?

Postby Astragoth » Wed Aug 29, 2007 5:55 pm

Hey everyone,

I'm running XP (not sure if its home or pro, since Control Panel isn't working for me - keep reading), and every program I run, Internet Explorer and Firefox, even Control Panel, says the following error message: -

Windows cannot access the specified device, path, or file. You may not have the appopriate permissions to access the item

I've looked up a lot of other forums, and I'm pretty sure it has something to do with permissions.

I've run Ad-Aware, Spybot, and Trend Micro Anti-Virus programs, but they don't find anything. I'm good at computers, lol, but not good at these sort of error message problems.

Please, can anyone help me out?

Thanks heaps.

Hello Astragoth, and welcome to our forum.

If you are able to run programs like Ad-Aware then I don't think it's a permission problem.

It sounds like it could be spyware or a trojan that is trying to run and is causing the error.

Please download HijackThis http://downloads.malwareremoval.com/hijackthis.zip and save it to your desktop.

To extract HijackThis:

1. Right-click your file HijackThis.zip and from the menu select "Extract All".
2. The Extraction Wizard Window will appear, Click "Next".
3. Click Browse and navigate to "C:\" or the "C:\Program Files" and click "Create A New Folder" and call it "HJT" or "HijackThis" or whatever that is easy to remember and then click OK.
4. Click the Extract button.
5. Close the HijackThis.zip dialogue box.

Now double-click on hijackthis.exe and when the window opens, Press the Scan now and save a logfile button and then when it is done, copy and paste the contents of the notepad it opens as a reply to this post.

As I said above, not one single program will work in normal mode, because of the error message, so I have to do everything through safe mode with networking.

Thanks heaps,

Astragoth,

There is nothing showing in your log that would cause this but because it was run in safe mode not everything is showing up.
I'm going to guess and have you run a program called vundofix it should work in safe mode as well..

Please download and save it to your desktop.

Double-click VundoFix.exe to run it.
When VundoFixopens, click the Scan for Vundo button.
Once it's done scanning, click the Remove Vundo button.
You will receive a prompt asking if you want to remove the files, click YES
Once you click yes, your desktop will go blank as it starts removing Vundo.
When completed, it will prompt that it will reboot your computer, click OK.

Note: It is possible that VundoFix encountered a file it could not remove.
In this case, VundoFix will run on reboot, simply follow the above instructions starting from "Click the
Scan for Vundo button." when VundoFix appears at reboot.

After the reboot(s) post a new Hijackthis log in your reply.

Nearly worked

Postby Astragoth » Thu Aug 30, 2007 5:05 pm

Hey Gecko,

Before I post the HijackThis log, I ran VundoFix in safe mode, and it didn't find any files. I restarted into normal mode, and everything worked! Lol, then an hour later, the error message came up again, and no programs worked again!

Any thoughts,

Astragoth

Astragoth,

Interesting results, try running the vundofix again and then boot into normal mode and see if you can then run hijackthis and save the scan and then run the vundofix again in normal mode.
Then post both the new hijackthis log and the vundofix log.

If you can't run them in normal mode then download L2mfix from one of these two locations:
http://www.atribune.org/downloads/l2mfix.exe
http://www.downloads.subratam.org/l2mfix.exe

Save the file to your desktop and double click l2mfix.exe.
Click the Install button to extract the files and follow the prompts, then open the newly added l2mfix folder on your desktop.

Double click l2mfix.bat and select option #1 for Run Find Log by typing 1 and then pressing enter.
This will scan your computer and it may appear nothing is happening, then, after a minute or 2, notepad will open with a log.

Copy the contents of that log and paste it into this thread.

IMPORTANT: Do NOT run option #2 OR any other files in the l2mfix folder until you are asked to do so!

Hey Gecko,

Well, I ran VundoFix in safe mode like I did last time, rebooted, all the programs worked again, so I ran HijackThis, it gave me a log, then I went to VundoFix, but the error came up again (lol, with all programs), so heres the HijackThis log for you. Maybe it will help.

Well, I ran RootKitReveal in normal mode, thanks to another VundoFix run.

Here's what it found:-

HKLM\SECURITY\Policy\Secrets\SAC* 3/7/2006 5:48 AM 0 bytes Key name contains embedded nulls (*)
HKLM\SECURITY\Policy\Secrets\SAI* 3/7/2006 5:48 AM 0 bytes Key name contains embedded nulls (*)

Astragoth,

Well you don't have a rootkit.
Try this next, run the vundofix in safe mode, reboot into normal mode and run the vundofix again.

If that does not find anything then, download L2mfix from one of these two locations:
http://www.atribune.org/downloads/l2mfix.exe
http://www.downloads.subratam.org/l2mfix.exe

Save the file to your desktop and double click l2mfix.exe.
Click the Install button to extract the files and follow the prompts, then open the newly added l2mfix folder on your desktop.

Double click l2mfix.bat and select option #1 for Run Find Log by typing 1 and then pressing enter.
This will scan your computer and it may appear nothing is happening, then, after a minute or 2, notepad will open with a log.

Copy the contents of that log and paste it into this thread.

IMPORTANT: Do NOT run option #2 OR any other files in the l2mfix folder until you are asked to do so!

Astragoth

I notice that you have a camera and a Nokio phone hooked up to your system.

Do you have two hard drives on your system? The reason I ask, is that if you install software to run from say the F drive and then later hook up a USB device, the F drive may now be the G drive and you would get an error like you now have. Pull the USB devices and reboot and see if the problem disappears.

Another problem I have seen happen is hooking up a 6 in one USB card reader to a system and doing an XP install. The install is done to the H drive and if you remove the USB 6 in 1 card reader, it will boot to the C but some programs will demand access to the H drive and fail to load.

Windows cannot access the specified device, path, or file...

Found a Trend Micro solution - to go into the Console and click on Virus and Spyware Control. Then click on Suspicious software alarm system, go to the exception list and allow explorer.exe or any other common files that might have been denied.

To Open - Press Ctrl-Alt-Del and open the task manager. Hold down Ctrl and click File > Run. This will open a command prompt. Type "C:\program files\trend micro\internet security 2007\pccmain.exe" (with quotes). This will open the Trend PC-cillin console.

Hey Gecko,

Well, after running VundoFix in safe mode, I thought it would work in normal mode. Nope. First time, I ran it as soon as I went into Windows, but the error came up.

Second time, I could run all other programs beforehand for an hour, then I run VundoFix, and the error comes up, and all other programs stop working.

So I gave up on that option and ran l2mfix (ran VundoFix in safe mode - then went back to normal mode), I got the log, lol, and then all other programs stopped working again cause of the error message. So got it just in time.

So here's the l2mfix log that I got in normal mode:-

Astragoth,

Finally we got something to work, this next step should really help.

Warning these instructions are for this thread only!
You should never attempt to use them for anything else!

Please copy this to Notepad and save it to your desktop or print it. Make sure to work through the fixes in the exact order it is mentioned below. If there's anything that you don't understand, ask your question(s) before proceeding with the fixes.
You should not have any other open windows when you are following the procedures below.

Close any programs you have open since this step requires a reboot.

From the l2mfix folder on your desktop, double click l2mfix.bat and select
Option #2 for Run Fix, by typing 2 and then pressing enter, then press any key to reboot your computer.

After a reboot, your desktop and icons will appear, then disappear (this is normal).
L2mfix will continue to scan your computer and when it's finished, notepad will open with a log.
Copy the contents of that log and paste it back into this thread, along with a new hijackthis log.

IMPORTANT: Do NOT run any other files in the l2mfix folder unless you are asked to do so!

Hey Gecko,

Before I do this, and I should of said this from the start, that the computer that has this error is a client's laptop. I don't want to erase any of the data on it, thats all.

If this is ok, do I have to close ALL of the programs in the taskbar before I run the program?

Also, is running the program ok in safe mode, since normal mode isn't really seem to be working for me anymore.

Thanks again,

Astragoth
