online registration, how do I stop it?

Postby carol » Sun Apr 22, 2007 9:12 pm

I bought a HP3180 printer but the online registration didn't connect (it thinks I don't have a connection). Now it's continually accessing the hard drive and trying to access the internet every few seconds. Task Manager shows 'vsmon.exe' momentarily firing up as the hard drive spins. When I switch the printer on, both activities stop. I really don't want the printer on all the time, so how do I stop this?

carol,

That actually sounds like HP update manager running in the background.

Go to Start > click Run and type the following:
Msconfig
Click OK, now go to the Startup tab uncheck the entry "HP Software Update" (or something close to that)
Click Apply and then OK and restart your system.
You will get a window on startup about the change you made put a check in the lower left corner to not show again.

Hi Gecko! Ok, I got to the Start tab but there were four items in there relating to HP >>> HP Photosmart Premier Fast Start, HP Digital Imaging Monitor, hpcmpmgr and HPWvSchd2. I looked up hpcmpmgr and that's the one that updates the drivers & software for the printer. I unticked all four anyway and the problem seems to have gone away. I'll have to wait and see if disabling the others causes any printer problems. Thanks for the help. Windows loaded up quicker too!
