Virus Problems

Postby Dave_Lethal » Sun Apr 08, 2007 9:12 pm

Hello

I have a bunch of files on a computer that I'm fixing for a friend of mine that will not go away. I've tried using Killbox and deleting them on reboot with no success. The file I'm most concerned about is Tmntsrv32.exe in the system32 folder. I also can't update AVG, something is blocking it, and I can't run Adaware. Can someone please check my log and let me know if there's anything I can do? I need to update windows and get this computer up and running smoothly again. Thanks.

Dave_Lethal,

Please download
Extract the content (a folder named SmitfraudFix) to your Desktop.

Open the SmitfraudFix folder and double-click smitfraudfix.cmd
Select option #1 - Search by typing 1 and press "Enter"; a text file will appear, which lists infected files (if present).
Please copy/paste the content of that report into your next reply. smile.gif

Note : process.exe is detected by some antivirus programs (AntiVir, Dr.Web, Kaspersky) as a "RiskTool";
it is not a virus, but a program used to stop system processes.
Antivirus programs cannot distinguish between "good" and "malicious" use of such programs, therefore they may alert the user.

I think I may have finally gotten rid of most of the crap, but there's still a problem. I cannot install any windows updates using the windows update website. I can install them manually just fine, though. The problem is, there are 61 updates I need to install and I don't want to do them all one by one. Also, AVG keeps detecting a virus after I attempt to install the update for AVG, and the virus is inside the AVG folder and I end up having to reinstall it.

Here is my log as you requested:

Ok, good things are happening. Service pack 2 is installing on that computer as I type this.

I ran Microsoft's spyware tool, and looked at the windows update.log file and found the error code and googled it.

I was missing tons of registry entries under HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE/Software/Microsoft/Windows NT/Current Version/Winlogon/Notify, the culprit being (I think) the SensLogn key.

I found a registry fix really quick and rebooted, and now the updates are running smoothly.

Hopefully all is well.

*crosses fingers*

Dave_Lethal,

You still have some hidden infections.

Reboot in to Safe mode:
Restart Windows after you see the BIOS screen and before Windows starts to load.
Start tapping the F8 key. The Windows Advanced Options Menu appears.
Use the Arrow key to ensure that the Safe Mode option is selected.
Press Enter. The computer then begins to start in Safe mode.

Double-click SmitfraudFix.exe
Select 2 and hit Enter to delete infect files.
You will be prompted: Do you want to clean the registry ? answer Y (yes) and hit Enter.
The tool will now check if wininet.dll is infected.
You may be prompted to replace the infected file (if found): Replace infected file ? answer Y (yes) and hit Enter to restore a clean file.

A reboot will be needed to finish the cleaning process.
The report can be found at the root of the system drive, usually at C:\rapport.txt
Please copy/paste the contents of that report into your next reply.

Well, I thought I posted a new log but apparently it didn't work. I can't post it now as I'm installing more windows updates, but I did run that tool as you said. And just to be safe, I ran an online BitDefender scan, and found an unbelievable 474 infected files, 23 different types of viruses. Most of them were in the System32 folder. I ran system file checker before rebooting just to make sure nothing vital was deleted. I can say that I've never seen this many viruses on one machine before, and I've worked on a lot of machines.

Anywho, I'm installing the rest of the updates (IE7, WMP11, etc.) right now and that's it. I have to give the computer back tomorrow because my boss needs it for something or another. If I get it back again I'll keep working at it.
