Sorry it took me a while to get back but I had to catch up with work.

System restore failed as it had before, the earliest one that worked was while I was at the hotel.

After running the bat file and deleting the .sys file, uninstall worked but after install the card was not recognized (only as PCI Card, driver when selected "does not contain info about your device"), as before.

Ran regedit and took out the entries. Some entries in subfolders under HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE could not be deleted, these were DeviceDesc, Mfg, Service, and FriendlyName entries.

After this uninstall worked but after reinstall, Found New Hardware would not come on and install new hardware could not find the device. Usually it wouldn't even blink. I tried uninstall and reinstall a few times from both the cd and the updated installer.

Could there be a problem with the PCI slot itself?

buboes,

It very well could be the PCMCIA slot especially if the card works in a different laptop and as you say it wouldn't even blink.

Try opening up those little doors and see if something is restricting contact.
I do not recommend using any type of canned air as you do not want to blow it farther into the laptop.
I have used a shop vac with some success, try blocking off all but one air intake vent and then try a vacuum.

You also don't want to use anything that has fibers like a cotton swab to remove any foreign object you may find.
Something somewhat sticky is what I've had the best results with, I use a real gum eraser glued to a chop stick.

Here's some "brain Surgery" that might show up the problem.

Right click on My Computer and select properties. Highlite the advanced tab in the System Properties window. Bottom left corner click on Enviromental variables.

When the Environment Variables screen appears, click New in the System Variables box. You'll then see the New System Variable screen. Enter "devmgr_show_nonpresent_devices" in
the Variable Name field and "1" in the Variable Value field (without the quotes). Click OK to save the new variable and OK again to close the Environment Variables screen.

Click the Hardware tab again and click Device Manager. Select View Hidden Devices from the View menu. You'll now see the Device Manager screen. This time, you may see new branches as well as devices with icons that are grayed out. Gray icons represent those devices that are missing from your system.

You'll probably see a lot of junk that you no longer have installed. The first thing I usually do is remove every usb device from the system and reboot. This usually solves a lot of issues. It will call for drivers and they are usually in the C:\windows\system32 directory. If not search the hard drive for the file asked for. They should be there.

XP will reserve resources for each USB device you plug into your system. So if you have 3 USB ports, and several USB devices you create a problem by plugging in the Printer into every USB port. After doing that the computer sees three printers not one. So if you have 3 pen drives a scanner, mouse, printer and an Ipod that all plug into the laptop, you have the potential for 3X7 USB installs (21 devices). This consumes a lot of resources. and creates lockups

If your still having issues, then look at the cardbus stuff in device manager and uninstall those also
