My McAfee has been finding trojans and I've run both Spybot and Ad-Aware (both of which found and fixed infected files), but strange web pages still pop up every time I go online. In fact, two have popped up just while I've been here. Any help is appreciated.

Hello CherB,

Please copy this to Notepad and save it to your desktop. Make sure to work through the fixes in the exact order it is mentioned below. If there's anything that you don't understand, ask your question(s) before proceeding with the fixes.
You should not have any open windows when you are following the procedures below.

Please download to your desktop.
Do not run it yet we will use it later.

CLick Start > Run and paste the below into the text box:
regsvr32 -u lmjotwyr.dll
Now press the enter key, you should get a windows that says lmjotwyr.dll unregistered successfully.

Close all other open Windows and have HiJackThis Fix:
O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [SoundService] rundll32.exe "C:\WINDOWS\System32\lmjotwyr.dll",setvm

Reboot in to Safe mode:
Restart Windows after you see the BIOS screen and before Windows starts to load.
Start tapping the F8 key. The Windows Advanced Options Menu appears.
Use the Arrow key to ensure that the Safe Mode option is selected.
Press Enter. The computer then begins to start in Safe mode.

Click Start, click My computer and then right click on your C: drive and select "Properties"
Now click the "Disk cleanup" button, in the next window put a check next to Recycle Bin, Temporary Internet Files and Temporary Files click OK and then click yes in the popup window.

[b]Go to My Computer->Tools/View->Folder Options->View tab and make sure that 'Show hidden files and folders' is enabled. Also make sure that Display the contents of System Folders' is checked. Remember to reset these when done.

Now click killbox.exe, select the option "Delete on reboot".
The Single file button should be blinking green

Next copy the below red part:
C:\WINDOWS\System32\lmjotwyr.dll

Click 'File' in the killbox Menu on top and choose Paste from clipboard
Now click the red X icon to delete these files on reboot
Killbox will tell you that all listed files will be removed on next reboot and asks if you would like to Reboot now, click YES

If you don't get that message, reboot manually.

Once your system has rebooted post a new HiJackThis log when you reply.

At the beginning of the fix I got the following message instead of "unregistered successfully":

lmjotwyr.dll was loaded, but the DLL RegisterServer entry point was not found. This file can not be registered.

I went through everything else smoothly, but when I just came back online I got another full page ad. Nothing has changed, when I hit the "preview" button yet another ad popped up.

CherB,

You still have an infection let's try a different approach and a new program.

Please download AVG Anti-Spyware 7.5 from
and save that file to your desktop.
This is a 30 day trial of the program

1. Once you have downloaded AVG Anti-Spyware 7.5, locate the icon on the desktop and double-click it to launch the set up program.

2. Once the setup is complete you will need run AVG Anti-Spyware and update the definition files.
3. On the main screen select the icon "Update" then select the "Update now" link.
Next select the "Start Update" button, the update will start and a progress bar will show the updates being installed.
4. Once the update has completed select the "Scanner" icon at the top of the screen, then select the "Settings" tab.
5. Once in the Settings screen click on "Recommended actions" and then select "Quarantine".
6. Under "Reports"
* Select "Automatically generate report after every scan"
* Un-Select "Only if threats were found"

Close AVG Anti-Spyware, Do Not run a scan just yet, we will shortly.

Reboot your computer into SafeMode:
Restart Windows after you see the BIOS screen and before Windows starts to load.
Start tapping the F8 key. The Windows Advanced Options Menu appears.
Use the Arrow key to ensure that the Safe Mode option is selected.
Press Enter. The computer then begins to start in Safe mode.

Start Hijackthis and select do a system scan only
Now put a check next the below entries:

Next click "Fix Checked" and then close Hijackthis.

IMPORTANT: Do not open any other windows or programs while AVG Anti-Spyware is scanning:

2. Select the "Scanner" icon at the top and then the "Scan" tab then click on "Complete System Scan".
3. AVG Anti-Spyware will now begin the scanning process, be patient this may take a little time.
Once the scan is complete do the following:
4. If you have any infections you will prompted, then select "Apply all actions"
5. Next select the "Reports" icon at the top.
6. Select the "Save report as" button in the lower left hand of the screen and save it to a text file on your system (make sure to remember where you saved that file, this is important).
7. Close AVG Anti-Spyware and reboot your system back into Normal Mode and post the results of the AVG Anti-Spyware report scan and a new Hijackthis log in your reply.

I ran the AVG and it fixed the things it found, but when I selected "reports" it said no report available. Here is the HijackThis log, but I'm still getting websites in different windows when online.

CherB,

Once again your log is clean.

If you are still getting popups then something is hidden from hijackthis or your have a rootkit.

We are going to try two different things to try and find the hidden file(s)

First please download and extract it to your root like this:
C:\rkr\ RootkitRevealer.exe
Leave the window open but Please don't run it yet.

Browse to:
My Documents\Hijack This\hijackthis\New Folder\HijackThis.exe
And rename HijackThis.exe to hjt.bat so it will look like this:
My Documents\Hijack This\hijackthis\New Folder\hjt.bat

Now double click the newly renamed file hjt.bat and click "Do a System scan and save a logfile".
Close Hijackthis and now start RootkitRevealer.exe that you extracted earlier and left the window open.

Close all other programs, windows and disable your screen saver before you start the RootkitRevealer scan.
While RootkitRevealer is running, you shouldn't do anything at all with the PC.
Put down the mouse, back away slowly, and let the program do its work.

Start RootkitRevealer.exe and press the Scan button.
It will take some time to finish an hour is common so just wait it out.

Once the scanning is finished RootkitRevealer will create a log, please copy the contents of that log into you reply along with the fresh Hijackthis log you made from the renamed file.

CherB,

I was right things were being hidden from Hijackthis;

It looks like you have the newest version of VX2. Download L2mfix from one of these two locations:
http://www.atribune.org/downloads/l2mfix.exe
http://www.downloads.subratam.org/l2mfix.exe

Save the file to your desktop and double click l2mfix.exe.
Click the Install button to extract the files and follow the prompts, then open the newly added l2mfix folder on your desktop.

Double click l2mfix.bat and select option #1 for Run Find Log by typing 1 and then pressing enter.
This will scan your computer and it may appear nothing is happening, then, after a minute or 2, notepad will open with a log.

Copy the contents of that log and paste it into this thread.

IMPORTANT: Do NOT run option #2 OR any other files in the l2mfix folder until you are asked to do so!

CherB,

Yes you do have a VX2 infection, so lets get to the fix.

Close any programs you have open since this step requires a reboot.

From the l2mfix folder on your desktop, double click l2mfix.bat and select
Option #2 for Run Fix, by typing 2 and then pressing enter, then press any key to reboot your computer.

After a reboot, your desktop and icons will appear, then disappear (this is normal).
L2mfix will continue to scan your computer and when it's finished, notepad will open with a log.
Copy the contents of that log and paste it back into this thread, along with a new hijackthis log (the renamed one).

IMPORTANT: Do NOT run any other files in the l2mfix folder unless you are asked to do so!

It loods like the l2mfix did not work, so we are going to try to remove it manualy.

Please copy this to Notepad and save it to your desktop. Make sure to work through the fixes in the exact order it is mentioned below. If there's anything that you don't understand, ask your question(s) before proceeding with the fixes.

Please download to your desktop.
Do not run it yet, you will use it later when you no access to the internet.

You should not have any open windows when you are following the procedures below.

Close all other open Windows and have HiJackThis Fix:
O2 - BHO: (no name) - {57E218E6-5A80-4f0c-AB25-83598F25D7E9} - C:\WINDOWS\System32\rohtdyoc.dll
O2 - BHO: (no name) - {800A0C44-E788-419C-B8B5-1B4964C56785} - C:\WINDOWS\System32\tuvvtqo.dll (file missing)
O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [SoundService] rundll32.exe "C:\WINDOWS\System32\yafkravf.dll",setvm
O20 - Winlogon Notify: pmkhg - C:\WINDOWS\System32\pmkhg.dll
O20 - Winlogon Notify: tuvvtqo - tuvvtqo.dll (file missing)

Reboot in to Safe mode:
Restart Windows after you see the BIOS screen and before Windows starts to load.
Start tapping the F8 key. The Windows Advanced Options Menu appears.
Use the Arrow key to ensure that the Safe Mode option is selected.
Press Enter. The computer then begins to start in Safe mode.

Click Start, click Run, type or copy and paste "regsvr32 -u %windir%\system32\pmkhg.dll" (without the quotation marks), and then click OK.
A dialog box appears to confirm that the un-registration process has succeeded. Click OK to close the dialog box.
Click Start, click Run, type or copy and paste "regsvr32 -u %windir%\system32\rohtdyoc.dll" (without the quotation marks), and then click OK.

Click killbox.exe, now select the option "Delete on reboot".
Now click on the "All files" button (it will turn green and flash)

Next copy the below red part:

C:\WINDOWS\System32\rohtdyoc.dll
C:\WINDOWS\System32\pmkhg.dll
C:\WINDOWS\System32\ndqfetay.dll
C:\WINDOWS\System32\ghkmp.ini
C:\WINDOWS\System32\yatefqdn.ini
C:\WINDOWS\System32\ghkmp.bak2
C:\WINDOWS\System32\dllcache\pmkhg.dll
C:\WINDOWS\System32\dllcache\ghkmp.bak1

Click 'File' in the killbox Menu on top and choose Paste from clipboard
Now click the red X icon to delete these files on reboot
Killbox will tell you that all listed files will be removed on next reboot and asks if you would like to Reboot now, click YES

If you don't get that message, reboot manually.

Once your system has rebooted post a new HiJackThis log when you reply.

Since you already had me download Killbox to my desktop, do I just use that one and not have to download it again? Also, when I run HijackThis, do I run it as .exe or .bat?
