Unable to save

Postby JROK » Sat Jan 13, 2007 2:19 am

Lately I have been unable to save anything on my computer. When I try to save documents in Word I get the error message:

"Word cannot save due to a file permission error."

I am currently running Windows XP Home
I posted this problem on here before, but didnt get too much help, so I figured I'd try it again.

So far I've reinstalled Windows. I didn't format I just used the repair utility. Other than that I have no idea what to try. Its not just word that this is happening

Any advice??

This sounds like a file and folder permissions problem to me.

You might have to turn off Simple File Sharing, and then take ownership of the folder you are trying to save to.

To turn off Simple File Sharing:

On the Tools menu, click Folder Options, and then click the View tab.
Under Advanced Settings, click to clear the Use simple file sharing (Recommended) check box, and then click OK.

Right-click the folder that you want to take ownership of, and then click Properties.
Click the Security tab, and then click OK on the Security message, if one appears.
Click Advanced, and then click the Owner tab.
In the Name list, click your user name, Administrator if you are logged in as Administrator, or click the Administrators group.

If you want to take ownership of the contents of that folder, click to select the Replace owner on subcontainers and objects check box.
Click OK.

You may receive the following error message, where Folder is the name of the folder that you want to take ownership of:
You do not have permission to read the contents of directory Folder. Do you want to replace the directory permissions with permissions granting you Full Control? All permissions will be replaced if you press Yes.
Click Yes.
Click OK, and then reapply the permissions and security settings that you want for the folder and the folder contents.

Also if you burned the file to a cd and then copied it back to your computer, it will be a read only file. In that case right click on the file and uncheck the read only box.

If you transfer a whole folder from the cd, you get the option when you right click the folder to remove the read only setting from everything in the folder, which saves a lot of time
