Can't Install Active X's

Postby PearlJamaholic » Thu Dec 07, 2006 11:56 pm

On my parents computer it won't install Active X's even after allowing them. The bar will pop-up and then the install box comes up. After you click Install it does nothing.
Ive ran through all the settings and even went back to the defaults. I shut Norton off and everything also. I noticed the problem when I went to do a Windows update cause it won't do it automatically even though it's set to. I've done the standard ad-aware and spy-bot runs and it comes back all clean.
I'm guessing I'll need to post a hijack this log but I thought maybe it's something simple to fix this that I don't know.

Thanks

Hi PearlJamaholic,

Sorry no quick fix that I know of to resolve this problem.

There are a number of programs that can affect the installation of active x programming like:
SpySweeper, SpywareGuard, AdWatch, TeaTimer, Microsoft AntiSpyware, A-Squared, WinPatrol etc…
Some spyware/malware can also affect active x installation.

So yes your best bet is to post a fresh Hijackthis log in your reply to this thread.

Ok I tried shuting everything off again. I can't believe the amount of crap on there. There is like a million spyware removal programs. You can't even update Spy-Bot without it being a hassle. My dad uses a proxy yet has no idea what it is. Just says "The one program has you set it up". Seems to me if you're this worried about spyware and such maybe you shouldn't be on a computer. Aye I could go on about how annoying that computer is but here is the log. I restarted the computer than ran Hijack This so this is what it looks like. Well maybe I (with help) can get it working so my mom can use it to some extent.

I don't really see anything bad in your log

You have two AntiVirus programs running, PersonalEdition Classic and Norton
You should only have one AntiVirus program installed and running at a time.
These two could be conflicting and causing the problem I would uninstall one of them.

Microsoft AntiSpyware Real-time Protection maybe interfering with active x.
Open Microsoft AntiSpyware.
Click on Tools, Settings.
In the left pane, click on Real-time Protection.
Under Startup Options uncheck Enable the Microsoft AntiSpyware Security Agents on startup (recommended).
Under Real-time spyware threat protection uncheck Enable real-time spyware threat protection (recommended).
After you uncheck these, click on the Save button and close Microsoft AntiSpyware.
Reboot the system for these changes to take affect and then try the active x.
Remember it is very important that you enable Real-time Protection again.

I cant uninstall norton. I've tried before it asks for the disc. Which I have no idea where that could be. And is AntiSpyware different than Defender?

I'm glad you got it working :)

I'm sure you'll get Kudos from your parents along with their belief that you are tech support

Might I suggest that you also update windows Defender to Microsoft AntiSpyware.
It's really not a bad program at all and does offer better than average active protection.

Well whatever they think I know where I get my help. Thanks again.
I thought Defender was the newer of the programs.
