Persistant trojan and email spammer

Postby Fandango » Sun Oct 01, 2006 12:07 pm

Hi Guys

I caught the World of Warcraft keylogger trojan a week ago. I have managed to clear the files such as svch0st.exe etc. but I have a persistant entry in my registry that I can't get rid of. Every time I delete it, it instantly returns. I have tried the methods mentioned in this kind of forum - safe mode, delete all temp files etc. but it won't go away. It is in this hijack log as: O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [jiahus] C:\WINDOWS\System32\svchcs.exe. As I have removed svchcs.exe from my system I presume it isn't actually doing anything, but it is annoying. If I click for Hijacks info on selected item I get a pop up window telling me about the following infected examples

regedit c:\windows\system\sp.tmp /s
KERNEL32.VBS
c:\windows\temp\install.js
rundll32 c:\program files\newdotnet\newdotnet4_5.dll,newdotnetstartup

(action taken: registry value is deleted)

The other problem I have is that I appear to have a spam email virus, but as far as I can see it doesn't come up on hijack logs, and my virus checker (AVG) and spyware programs (Adaware and Ewido) can't find it. I get undeliverable emails returned to me with attachments such as details.txt and a randomly named file ie meeting or something. Weird thing is that one of them said it was recieved at 6.30am when my PC was turned off. Is it possible someone has hijacked my email address and these emails are not coming from my PC? The emails sent are all "random gobbledegook@mydomain.co.uk".

First off are any of the below your Internet Service Provider?

62.6.40.178 = indnsc71.ukcore.bt.net
62.6.40.162 = indnsc70.ukcore.bt.net

194.73.73.94 = americium.btinternet.com
194.72.6.57 = indnsc10.ukcore.bt.net

213.120.62.100 = inh2dns04.imsnet2.btopenworld.com

Next download
Extract it to your desktop but don't run it yet.

Boot into safe mode
Go to My Computer->Tools/View->Folder Options->View tab and make sure that 'Show hidden files and folders' is enabled. Also make sure that Display the contents of System Folders' is checked.

Now delete all the contents of all your temp folders found here:
C:\Documents and Settings\(user name)\Local Settings\Temporary Internet Files\Content.IE5
C:\Documents and Settings\(user name)\Local Settings\Temp
C:\WINDOWS\Temp

There will be some files that cannot be delete they will have names like "~e5d141.tmp"

Next run KillBox click on the folder icon and browse to the file you could not delete.
Now put a check next to 'Delete on reboot' click on the red X, click yes to delete file on reboot.
Click no to reboot now. Now do the same for each of the files you could not delete on the last one click yes to reboot now.

After the reboot post a new Hijackthis log and answer the question about your ISP

Hi Gecko

Thanks for helping me out. I did what you said and it seems to have got rid of the undeletable cookie - not sure if that was doing anything but nice to be rid of it :-)

Killbox couldn't really help with the Jiahus problem as it is a setting in the registry not an actual file. I deleted the entry while in safe mode but as soon as I rebooted Adaware warned me that it had written itself back in to the registry. I have no idea what program is writing it back all the time.

BT Openworld is my ISP, although the others you mention are all BT related so probably OK. Here is the new log.

It is most likely a .dll file that reloads the svchcs.exe. Let's see if we can find it.

Start HijackThis and click the Open the misc tools section
Put a check next to "List also minor sections (full)" and click the "Generate Startuplist log" click yes.
Notepad will pop up with the list it generated copy the contents into this thread.

Hi

Still sending the spam somehow. I got this (these?) nasties because I wasn't running a firewall as someone told me you don't need one if you are behind a router - bleh - so I installed Zonealarm. Weird thing is that although I check the start on startup box and it amends my registry every time, it never starts at startup. Could a virus be changing my registry to stop it somehow?

Here is the new log

OK I did some research and I think that the NameServer entries are bad.
Of the 5 IPs listed only one is a domain name server 194.73.73.94 all the others fail on open dns ports.
This could be where you re-infection is coming from.
If after you remove them you can not connect to the internet then you will have to restore them using Hijackthis by:
Start Hijackthis and click the "View the list of backups" select the listings below and click restore:
O17 - HKLM\System\CCS\Services\Tcpip\..\{2DED46BB-A9A6-466B-9487-43257087ED50}: NameServer = 194.73.73.94,194.72.6.57

Please put hijackthis in it's own folder like this
C:\Documents and Settings\Mark\Desktop\hijackthis\HijackThis.exe
This way the restore feature will work right.

Please copy this to Notepad and print it. Make sure to work through the fixes in the exact order it is mentioned below. If there's anything that you don't understand, ask your question(s) before proceeding with the fixes.

You should not have any open windows when you are following the procedures below.

Reboot in to Safe mode:
Restart Windows after you see the BIOS screen and before Windows starts to load.
Start tapping the F8 key. The Windows Advanced Options Menu appears.
Use the Arrow key to ensure that the Safe Mode option is selected.
Press Enter. The computer then begins to start in Safe mode.

Press Ctrl/Alt/Del and "End Task" or "End Process" on each of the following:
(They may or may not be there)
svchcs.exe

Turn off system restore by right clicking on My Computer and go to Properties->System Restore and check the box for Turn off System Restore. Click Apply and then OK. (Turn it back on after this is repaired and you've rebooted.)
Close all other open Windows and have HiJackThis Fix:

O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [jiahus] C:\WINDOWS\System32\svchcs.exe
O17 - HKLM\System\CCS\Services\Tcpip\..\{2DED46BB-A9A6-466B-9487-43257087ED50}: NameServer = 194.73.73.94,194.72.6.57
O17 - HKLM\System\CCS\Services\Tcpip\..\{A4817F42-DB3E-4652-A2B3-BFB8446009C3}: NameServer = 62.6.40.162,62.6.40.178
O17 - HKLM\System\CCS\Services\Tcpip\..\{ACC33C1D-2DED-42D6-9E0B-E3DE624FBAB5}: NameServer = 213.120.62.100
O17 - HKLM\System\CS1\Services\Tcpip\..\{2DED46BB-A9A6-466B-9487-43257087ED50}: NameServer = 194.73.73.94,194.72.6.57
O17 - HKLM\System\CS2\Services\Tcpip\..\{2DED46BB-A9A6-466B-9487-43257087ED50}: NameServer = 194.73.73.94,194.72.6.57
O21 - SSODL: Adobe Acrobat 5.0 - {F4875616-77E5-E86A-766F-48461B0B9CB9} - (no file)

Go to My Computer->Tools/View->Folder Options->View tab and make sure that 'Show hidden files and folders' is enabled. Also make sure that Display the contents of System Folders' is checked. Remember to reset these when done.
Delete the following File:

C:\WINDOWS\System32\svchcs.exe

If you cannot delete this file then use KillBox with the delete on restart option

Now, empty all your TEMP Folders, Temporary Internet Files Folder and then empty your Recycle Bin, reboot and post a new HiJackThis log.

Hi Gecko

Did everything as you said but on reboot the jiahus and Adobe entries were back and Adaware reported them as new entries in the registry. I think we can rule out that they were getting instructions from the Internet as "fixing" the nameservers stopped my Internet access and I had to restore them. I tried different ones in case some were rogue and settled on the one in this hijack log as it was the only one that worked.

I am not able to delete the svchcs.exe file as I deleted it a week ago and it is no longer on my PC, only the command to launch it is there which I can't get rid of, and the spam email virus which may or may not be related as I got it around the same time.

Many thanks for persevering :-)

Mark.

I'm glad you worked through the ISP issue and now have only one DNS listing. :)
I really think all the other listing were rogue as I could resolve the ip but could not ping any open ports!
By chance have the spam emails stopped?

I see that it has returned again and I can find almost no information on svchcs.exe
I'm thinking that you may have a rootkit (a way to hide files from windows itself)

Please download and extract it.
Close all other open windows and run RootkitRevealer, click Scan it will take a long time to finish.

Please note that not everything found is a rootkit!

When it is finished click file and then save,I suggest that you save it to root like this C:\ RootkitReveal.txt
Ignore the nag window when trying to change where it is saved and select C: drive.
By default it will be saved here; c:\windows\system32\RootkitReveal.txt
Copy the contents of RootkitReveal.txt into this thread.

I also would suggest that you boot into safe mode and run Ad-Aware, Ewido and AVG in that order.
They all have a better chance of find and removing items when in safe mode!
Please take note on what if anything each one finds as this could point us in the right direction.

Well you don't have a rootkit that's good news

These means that at one time you had daemon tools/alcohol installed.
HKLM\SYSTEM\ControlSet001\Services\Vax347s\Config\$winnt32$_test
HKLM\SYSTEM\ControlSet001\Services\Vax347s\Config\jdgg40

These could be why Zone alarm is not working and they are only 4 bytes each spyware is at least 7 bytes.
HKLM\SOFTWARE\Zone Labs\ZoneAlarm\BlockCount
HKLM\SOFTWARE\Zone Labs\ZoneAlarm\IncomingCount

These look like something that was installed but the executable may have changed but they are old dated 1/2006.
HKLM\SOFTWARE\Classes\Installer\Products\32418F9EE1126B64A90E8365B85CFCF6\ProductName HKLM\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Uninstall\{E9F81423-211E-46B6-9AE0-38568BC5CF6F}\DisplayName

The other two have Null (*) spaces and are 0 bytes nothing to worry about.

The bad news I'm running out of ideas.

Is the file C:\WINDOWS\System32\svchcs.exe actually on you system?
If so can you upload it here - http://www.rapidshare.de/ - and post back with the download link for me to check.

The file is no longer on my system. I deleted it. Only the instruction to load it in the registry is there. If I delete the instruction it comes straight back. It seems odd that it comes back when there doesn't seem to be a program running to make it do so, unless the hackers are clever enough to integrate their code into a legitimate program? I don't think it is actually doing anything as the file isn't there to load, so it's not the end of the world, just annoying.

I am more concerned with the email spam I am sending out. This is still happening, but I'm not sure how. I had a similar virus a couple of years ago and it took up all my bandwidth sending Viagra type emails, but this one doesn't seem to be sending anything according to DUmeter, but I am getting 6-8 returned emails a day from defunct email addresses. Is it possible that these emails are not originating from my PC, just using my domain name?

Many thanks

Mark.

I have spoken to my ISP. The IP addresses seem to vary so they feel that the emails are being sent by another PC but using my domain name - apparently this is quite common, and I will continue to get this spam until the IP addresses of the spammers get blocked by ISP's.

It's a shame we couldn't get the jiahus thing, although I don't think it's a major problem. I do find it a challenge to get rid of it though :-) It replaces a deleted registry entry immediately. Any idea what type of program can do that, considering that it doesn't show in the Hijackthis log or my processes list? Could the command be hidden in a genuine program? I notice I have duplicates of some programs running, but I have no idea if there should be more than one. If anyone has any ideas on this I would be grateful. Other than that, thank you very much Gecko for your help. You are doing valuable work for which decent society is grateful.

There are a number of file types that can edit the registry
*.exe, *.dll, *.com, *.tmp, *.sys *.bat … the list goes on

Now I did see two things in your startup list that I could find no information for, they are:
litsgt: System32\DRIVERS\litsgt.sys (autostart)
tansgt: System32\DRIVERS\tansgt.sys (autostart)

But these could very well be part of legit drivers for some obscure device.

You could you upload these files here - http://www.rapidshare.de/ - and post back with the download link for me to check them out.

Here you go

http://rapidshare.de/files/35484013/litsgt.sys.html

http://rapidshare.de/files/35484231/tansgt.sys.html

Be careful. They might be nasty :-)

Thanks for looking
