Printer installation niggles

Postby Jazzman » Sat Sep 23, 2006 3:17 pm

Hello all!

I recently moved in to a new house, and found a good desktop computer and printer stuffed away in a cupboard. After resurrecting the computer I downloaded the printer driver from Epsons website, but it would not install. Here are the error messages I got:

"Cannot install this hardware
there was a problem installing this hardware:

EPSONStylus D68

An Error occurred during the installation of this device
The RPC server is unavailable."

And

[i]"Operation could not be completed. The print spooler service is not running."[/i

Any ideas anyone? There was a Lexmark printer installed on this system but as we dont have that printer I got rid of it, but the uninstall was a little messy. Could this explain it?

Cheers

That set of errors occurs when the print spooler is not running while trying to install a printer.

Click Start > Run and type net start spooler into the text box and press enter.
Now try to install the printer.

Thanks for that! But it didn't work I'm afraid...

The printer port is set to PORT.

To use the printer on a network, change the printer port as necessary.

And

The RPC server is unavailable

Any more ideas???

Thanks

I tested out a Lexmark printer on my system and got the same stuff and uninstalling it was not easy as you mentioned

Here is the fix for it.

Navigate to the HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Services\Spooler registry subkey and find an entry with the name DEPENDSonService. Backup this entry so you can restore it if other problems arise. After backing it up, delete the entry (value). Restart the machine and all should be well.

This is a cut and paste from :

Another reason not to buy a Lexmark printer!!!

Geckos solution might also work, I don't really want to reinstall the Lexmark to test it out, once was enough
