Do you have a Windows XP CD?
If so then drop it in your cd drive and see if that will fix the "asms" file error.

A lot depends on what version of Windows XP cd you have, if sp1or sp2 is included in the cd then you should be fine.

If it does not work then you will have to Service pack 2 and create a windows xp sp2 cd
Windows xp Service pack 2 contains everything included in service pack 1

You will need to download first and then follow the direction found on the slipstream link.

 the xp pro cd that i have contains sp1 on it. i explored the disk and found the asms folder inside of the I386 folder. my computer (the sick one) doesn't recognize that the disk is in the drive. I took the drive out and switched it with a known to be working drive and got the same results. When prompted for the sp1 disk, there are a couple of default directories that come up. It doesn't appear to let me change those either....where it should look for the file.

Boot off of the windows xp cd press R at the install screen and login to your windows install.
At the command prompt Type:
expand X:\i386\asms c:\(the path that it is looking for the asms files) in the Open box, where X is your CD ROM Drive and press enter.

Take out the cd and Type: exit and press enter the system will reboot

i skipped past that one, but now it won't accept my product key for xp. I am certain that the disk that i have is not the one that was originally loaded onto my hd. does that matter?

I don't think anything you have done so far would affect the windows version installed.

What product key are you trying to use, the windows xp pro key or the one from the sticker on your system's case?

This is starting to sound more like a hard drive problem, let's run a disk check first though.

Boot from your windows xp cd, go into the recovery console (press r at install screen)
When you get to the command prompt, type:
chkdsk /r and press enter

This will take some time to complete and you may be prompted to run chkdsk /f if you have any bad sectors.

Once the disk check is finished lets make sure the file is writeable, type:
attrib –r C:\windows\System32\Config\Software and press enter.

Reboot and see if it worked
