Computer Freezes Only On The Internet!!

Postby mparegian » Mon Jul 10, 2006 4:52 am

I have looked through a ton of previously asked questions and have not found an answer, so here goes!!!

Ok folks, I've got something I just can't figure out. I have a fairly new Compaq Presario (512 RAM) (200 GB Hardrive) 3200+ AMD Athlon 64 Processor and Windows XP Service Pak 2) with all the bells and whistles. It works just great until I put it on the internet. Then it freezes up and quits on me entirely. Just recently it became infected with several Trojans and malware. I effectively cleaned them all off and have performed all the other steps that are suggested to clean up the computer, including running many many on-line scanners including Trend Micro, Ad-Aware, Sypbot Search & Destroy, Spy Sweeper, Spy Catcher, Spywareblaster, AVG, various reg cleaners, check disk, defrag, Windows Defender, Window Washer and I have cleaned up the "Start" menu to include only the most minimal things that will make this computer work and protect it. OK - as soon as I connect to the internet (which it does very well) it immediately freezes up and when I go into "Task Manager" it shows the CPU usage as 100% - and I can do nothing except try to turn it off which takes about 15 minutes if I use Task Manager. I definitely need some help here - anyone have any ideas ???

There are a number of things that could be causing this problem all are spyware/trojan related.
Lets see if we can isolate the trouble;
Please download , unzip it to it's own folder.
Start HijackThis and select 'Do a system scan and save a logfile'
Now post the contents of the logfile back into this thread

Please copy this to Notepad and print it. Make sure to work through the fixes in the exact order it is mentioned below. If there's anything that you don't understand, ask your question(s) before proceeding with the fixes.
You should not have any open windows when you are following the procedures below.

Press Ctrl/Alt/Del and "End Task" or "End Process" on each of the following:
(They may or may not be there)

Turn off system restore by right clicking on My Computer and go to Properties->System Restore and check the box for Turn off System Restore. Click Apply and then OK. (Turn it back on after this is repaired and you've rebooted.)
Close all other open Windows and have HiJackThis Fix:

O2 - BHO: (no name) - {0a3b4d9e-37b3-454f-afb3-e8aac8590b9e} - (no file)
O20 - Winlogon Notify: mnmmgr - mnmmgr.dll (file missing)

Now, empty all your TEMP Folders, Temporary Internet Files Folder and then empty your Recycle Bin, and reboot the system.

Restart HijackThis and click the Open the misc tools section now put a check in both boxes next to generate startuplist log and then click Generate Startuplist log,
Post this startup list log and a new hijack this log

I don’t see anything bad in either of those logs :(

When you access the internet and the cpu usage goes to 100% what program is using up all the cpu?
Use Ctrl + Alt + Delete to access task manager, process tab look under cpu to see what’s eating it all up.

You could also try downloading this is a 30 day trial of the program.
On the main screen select the icon "Update" then select the "Update now" link.
Next select the "Start Update" button, the update will start and a progress bar will show the updates being installed.
Once the update has completed select the "Scanner" icon at the top of the screen, then select the "Settings" tab.
Once in the Settings screen click on "Recommended actions" and then select "Quarantine".
Under "Reports"
Select "Automatically generate report after every scan"
Un-Select "Only if threats were found"
Close ewido anti-spyware, Do Not run a scan just yet, we will shortly.

Reboot your computer into SafeMode. You can do this by restarting your computer and continually tapping the F8 key until a menu appears. Use your up arrow key to highlight SafeMode then hit enter.
IMPORTANT: Do not open any other windows or programs while ewido is scanning, it may interfere with the scanning proccess:
Lauch ewido-anti-spyware by double-clicking the icon on your desktop.
Select the "Scanner" icon at the top and then the "Scan" tab then click on "Complete System Scan".
ewido will now begin the scanning process, be patient this may take a little time.
Once the scan is complete do the following:
If you have any infections you will prompted, then select "Apply all actions"
Next select the "Reports" icon at the top.
Select the "Save report as" button in the lower left hand of the screen and save it to a text file on your system (make sure to remember where you saved that file, this is important).

Close ewido and reboot your system back into Normal Mode and post the results of the ewido report scan.

dumprep.exe which I understand is a Microsoft tool to end programs - but it just keeps adding more lines and eventually freezes up.

So if I am correct dumprep.exe is taking up all of your CPU usage? If that is the case, you can disable Microsoft Error Reporting which I find is pretty much useless anyway, here are instructions on how to do that

Hope this helps.

dumprep.exe creates memory dumps used to send to Microsoft for analysis in case of a program crash.
What this means is that a program has crashed and dumprep.exe is dumping all related information to a text file.

Is internet explorer the program crashing or is it something else?

Have you tried using a different browser like to access the internet?

You didn't respond to my two HiJack This posts??? Did you not find any problems ??

I can't tell which program is causing it to freeze as it freezes on whatever program I'm trying to use - so I got rid of dumprep.exe - that did not help at all.

Yes, I did install FireFox and yes it does run perfectly with that browser which only tells me that there is still something wrong in IE. I am unhappy about not being able to fix IE as it is my browser of choice. Did you find anything at all in my two last HiJack This postings ????

Here is a little goodie that would repair the internet connectivity if the winsock is toasted.

There is a good bet that the spyware messed up you tcp/ip There will be two options on the program. take the top one which does a rebuild.

Set a system restore point before you run it.

Hope this is of some help.
