Vista Install

Tried a clean install of Vista. It choked on my HP5300 scanner (not compatible)
Couldn't find my modem. My Rex 6000 palm is incompatable.. Tried to load the Nvidia drivers (for Vista) choked on that, told me that I didn't have a NVidoa card.

Next I tried an install over XP pro. I had to remove all antivirus Zonealarm, and just about anything that was monitoring my system. Still can't find the modem. It might be there.

Microsoft has moved everything around. I feel like a blind man sticking my hand in a blender. All sorts of little folders pop up. The one that looked harmless was the small one showing pictures I had stored on the drive. That can be a real eye opener when it hits some of the stills I downloaded of Paris Hilton.

Nag screens and warnings all over--I'm not real impressed. It doesn't look user friendly.

I've got 11 more days to get my modem working so I can activate the system. Maybe its just buggie--I can't imagine anyone loading this that has a temper.

Hooked up my xp pro drive back up to my system. Forgot to plug in my USB stuff. Plugged it all in and the modem wouldn't work with XP pro. Found out that all of the USB devices had reinstalled and wiped out any IRQ's for the modem. Cleaned up the mess and I am back on line with my XP pro. I think that I will put Vista on a separate machine with nothing hooked up. Disconnecting my XP Pro HD and hooking up a spare HD for Vista just won't cut it with all the usb stuff I have to attach and unattach for the install.

The clean install was fairly fast 45 minutes. The install over XP was about 2 hours, and at times you think that its locked up--no hour glass.

the DVD license says you can install it on 10 machines. That might take me some time.

Somebody was asking if there was a charge on the MS download option. I don't think so, but you had better have a dvd burner or some networking skills because the download is 3gigabytes----There has to be a bottleneck with bandwith on the MS servers with this item.!!!!!

You've got some healthy band width. At work, we have a T-1 line that can't even get 1/3 of your download rate. Who's your service provider? I just might get rid of my dial up!

I get anywhere from 300-800 kb/s, depending where I'm downloading from, I have Comcast as my ISP.

cable and I've seen as high as 850kb/sec, up is slow about 50kb/sec.

How is the Vista install going????

I've kind of set mine to the side as "Something to do when I have run out of things to do."

I just finished installing it, I can’t believe the size of this OS 5GB of space and nothing else is installed yet.
It took about 45 minutes from starting the install to a usable desktop a little faster than thought it would be.
I’m running it on an AMD 3200 with 1gig of ram and a GeForce 6800 video card.
Vista found and installed all the hardware but the sound blaster card.

The one thing I noticed is no more My stuff, my picture my music my docs are gone.
It’s just picture, music and so on, I kind of got used to my stuff and I miss it.
Security pop ups everywhere all the time, I hope this is addressed in the final version.

So far it is running stable but the indexing is eating up the cpu it’s running at 30% - 40% all the time.
Hopefully once everything is indexed the cpu usage will settle down to around 5%

A trip to curative’s site and I found the vista drivers, sound is now working.

My sound and modem drivers did not load. I had the cd for the sound and it installed ok, I've got the modem cd somewhere in amongs 1,000 other cd's--tried drivers.com and it puked on that so I guess I'll search through the cds.

I noticed that if it can't find a file it needs on the install it doesn't come back and ask for the file, it just returns with the screen "Install failed." You used to be able to search for the file and trick it in.
