On Board Audio Problems

Postby Demortal » Tue Apr 25, 2006 7:21 pm

Greetings,

This will be my first post here in which seems like a pretty good place for computer help. I have tried alot of things to fix my problem and have fell short in all.

Here is my story, about 2 weeks ago I went to future computers and bought a new motherboard (ASrock K7VM3 Socket A). Everything was running great untill my cable modem's power supply blew. After that I was pretty ticked because it seems everytime I turn around something goes wrong. It has been about 3 days since then and my computer is running perfect and I got a brand new modem, only problem is the sound isn't working....I have tried everything, checking Device Manager, updated driver, updated BIOS, installed windows xp (sound wasn't working before that so thats not the problem) and called the people I bought the motherboard off of, the only thing they said is bring it in so we can test it. I am really not wanting to bring it in and pay 20 dollars for something I could have fixed myself, SO now my last hope is this forum. If anyone at all has a theory or idea please inform me of it as soon as posable....

-Thanks-

Have you tried downloading the VIA AC'97 audio drivers from and installing them?

Also is there anyway I can check and see if the driver is bad or burnt? Some sort of program maybe?

Have you checked the BIOS to make sure that the onboard sound is enabled?

Other than that it might very well be the VIA sound chip set on the motherboard.

Ok, I just got done takeing my computer apart and hooking the cables and everything back up again wishing something would jar the audio to kick in. Nothing happend.....Anyway the VIA sound chip is a square chip on the computer isn't it? Well when I got my new motherboard I got the old one back. IF so then the old chip might work right? I heard to guy I bought it off of said the chip on my old one and on this one was brothers. If this in fact the same chip please give me a discription or pic and also can I switch them out at home? Or do I need some type of soder tool or something (not to smart about boards).

Thanks for the help so far

I don’t think you will be able to swap out the VIA sound chip it take specialized equipment.
There would be a real good chance that you would destroy the motherboard altogether.

Your best bet is to pickup a pci sound card like from Newegg for $7.49 plus $4.99 for shipping.
