Welcome to the forums cypherth,

Lets see if we can narrow it down,

Try rebooting into safe mode and see if it locks up.
If it does not freeze then try rebooting into normal windows and see what happens.
If any of the above works, then it’s a software problem.

If it still freezes then it most likely is a conflict between the western digital and the Maxtor sata drives.
What chipset/card do you have for these two sata drives?

Now you said that with the windows cd in everything was fine, is that right?
If so then there is something in the boot sector that is asking for the windows cd.

Are you able to fdisk and format the maxtor drive or is it full of irreplaceable data?

i am convinced that the problem occurs with the sata II maxtor 6v300fo model.
now i removed it and all works fine.
i updated the drivers from the msi official site and nothing happens/i cant boot on safe mode when the disk is connected!!!!
i dont know what to do. another problem came up. now i made an update and my msater disk the one with the xp is down in the tray (safely remove) why????

It might have something to do with the stat bios setup for the Maxtor drive verses the western digital drive.

What chipset/card do you have for these two sata drives?

Are you using a raid setup?

no i am not using a raid setup
nothing is wrong with the western digital drives because i disconnect them
i am sure that the problem is with the maxtor sata II 300gb
my mobo has something in bios says: sata spread spectum what is it?? is is disabled. but nothing changes when i change it
