Laprop OS Installation

Postby ti4200 » Thu Mar 23, 2006 11:58 pm

Hi

I am trying to do a fresh install of a Compaq Presario 1200 and when try to run Win98se setup it says i have less than 16mb of memory and cannot continue even though the laptop has over this amount. I have also tried the Win98se setup arguements to get by
this to no success. I then tried to install WinMe which freezes on startup of
installation.

I am out of ideas as i cant find original recovery cd's.

Any help is much appreciated

If the video is shared ram then it might not have enough ram left to install win98 se.

What was the original OS win98 se, win 98 or win 95?

it comes with 32mb onboard but has a 128mb expansion the inbuilt video can be altered between 2/4/8mb. The original pc comes shipped with Win98 not sure if is se or not though. Tried to use the setup /im arguement which is meant to skip the ram check but still no luck. Could the cpu being an amd k6 be causing issues with compatibility?

Anyways any suggestions on how to fix will be excellent

thanks

First copy all the files in the Win98 folder on the win98 CD to the hard drive at c:\windows\options\cabs.
To do this you will have to use the mkdir command to create the folders.
Once all the files are copied reboot the laptop with the win98 startup disk.
Navigate to the c:\windows\options\cabs folder and then type:
Setup.exe /im

gecko thanks for the suggestoin unfortunately it didn't work i had previously copied the win98 folder to the c drive but at the c:\win98 location anyway tried your folder path and the /im switch but the message 'Windows 98 requires a computer with at least 16mb of memory' still comes up. have run memtest program detects all the ram and finds no errors.

tried to install windows me also and it freezes on the first progress bar at %100. In an attempt of desperation I tried to put win95 on then maybe upgrade but win98 but also freezes up cant remember where though.

The funny thing is i have two of these laptops that are identical models and they all have identical issues maybe i will try 2000 professional......
