whine

Postby Tank » Tue Feb 28, 2006 6:14 am

Ok guys, now i am getting worried. I can hear a high pitched whine coming from my hard drive!! It just started tonight, the darn thing is only 1 year old!! It is a western digital 160GB 8MB Cache, IDE. Is this a sign it is going to fail on me? I can barely hear it. It has to be real quiet in here and even then, gotta be 1 foot from the tower. Thanks

Relax

Its probably the CPU fan-- they go bad all of the time.

Crack the case and check it out, I have jumped to the same conclusion as you have several times so its not an easy diagnose without the case open.

The CPU fan is a non lubricated item, and they do go bad. If you turn it off frequently and have pets with hair, the problem could be noticable even sooner--like a couple of months.
