Ati Radeon 9800 video driver help....

Postby Cochese » Sat Feb 25, 2006 4:54 am

first off, kzz5 just recommended i come here to have my problem solved. i hope someone can help me

well my computer was just fine until my video card driver was "magically" uninstalled. i have no idea how. so, i uninstall all the ATI driver stuff i have and i go to reinstall the most recent driver for my video card. when i think all is going right, i get this error saying "Setup was unable to complete the installation. Try to setup your display adapter with a standard VGA driver before running setup."

here's a screenshot of the error message... Image

i've also tried doing a system restore, but that didnt work either.

if you have any suggestions on how to solve this, you can post them here or contact me at maj.mikel@gmail.com or by xfire. my username is rblacrosse4life

thanks

Welcome, im sure we'll be able to help.

Try doing this,
Go into your device manager by right clicking My Computer>properties>hardware>device manager.

You will probably see a :!: next to your display adapter (video card)
Right click the video card>update driver
Choose "no, not at this time" if asked to search from windows update and click ok
Now choose "Install the software automaticly" and click ok.
Let it install the drivers it finds (should be basic drivers) then reboot.
If that went correctly, you should be able to install the newest ATI drivers.

Let us know the result :)

OK, go back into the device manager and right click the video card again. This time, choose to remove/uninstall it and reboot. When your machine comes back up it should start the New Hardware Wizard again. Try to install it through there again and see if it takes it.

I'm getting the same exact error as before...

After I uninstall them and reboot, my computer recognizes there's new hardware (video controller). Then, it asks me if i want to continue installing new hardware, so i click continue (there is also and stop installing button). Then the computer wants me to put in the cd that has the driver on it, and i do. After that, i get a pop-up that tells me it cant find a file off the cd, so i go had to find the files myself. after that, i get the same error.

someone recommended i reformat my hard drives. if this problem isnt solved, would i have to reformat?

ok, i got the first half of the problem solved. i was able to install the driver on the original disc by enabling VGA on safe mode. the only problem is that i cant install any recent drivers. i still get the same error with the VGA thing.
