Fat32 To NTFS

Postby Muddy » Wed Jan 25, 2006 10:51 pm

:?: I have a Sony Vaio FX-340 Laptop,P3 900mhz.When I used the Recovery disk that came with the Computer it will not let me Partition the C: Drive to one large Partition or format in NTFS.Is there any way to change fat32 to NTFS in Disk Management in XP Home or should I just use my OEM XP Home Disk and then load Drivers? Thanks Muddy!

It easy to convert to ntfs go to Start > Run > type cmd and press enter
at the command prompt type:
convert C: /fs:ntfs
(assuming C:\ is your windows drive)
You will receive the following error message:
Convert cannot gain exclusive access to the C:\ drive:, so it cannot convert it now.
Would you like to schedule it to be converted the next time the system restarts (Y/N)?
Select yes restart the system and the conversion will take place.

You can read the Microsoft article here:
http://support.microsoft.com/kb/314097/

But make sure your read this Microsoft article before your convert!

Hope I'm not too late, but here is an article you might want to read before doing the conversion

Basically the Windows conversion utility, if it has a problem uses the default size of 512 clusters, this can really slow down a large drive when you need 4 k clusters.

Good luck

:| Thanks for the article Icecube! It looks like it can be done but seems to be more trouble than it's worth. Sonys System Recovery Disk for my FX340 work, but I ended up using my XP Home OEM Disk insted.A much easyer way to go at least for me.The Sony Disk will not let me Partition the 15 GB Hard Drive in to one big Partition and the FAT32 Crap was no good.I've learned Something new again! When in Doubt,Ask the Pros. Thanks for all the Help!
