Selling your stuff online

I was wondering if anyone knows how to sell things off your website?
I want to be able to do this:, for example:

Have a customer choose click on a " buy" button, and then they send me their money under a secure program or server. Is SSL what people use to do money transaction?

Paypal is a secure way of paying. I think you would have to buy a secure server or something if you want to do like the credit card buy now thing, it always or well it should always log into a secure server before you enter any details, how ever with paypal you just join it, securely, and you can send payments to other paypal members.
Paypal is 1 of the ways you pay on ebay. I’ve found it fairly good, apart from i would recommend upgrading to the proper account. You only get a certain amount of sending, and I don’t think its very clear, to upgrade is only a pound.

If your selling on your site, you just add a pay with payapl button, and they send the money via paypal.

venney’s suggestion of using paypal is the way to go when you are first starting out selling online.
It is what I recommend to all my customers who want to start an e commerce web site.

SSL (Secure Sockets Layer) is needed if you are going to process credit cards yourself.
And it is not cheep to get started processing credit card purchases on line
There is the SSL certificate plus a onetime startup fee plus per transaction fees from the credit card processing company.

Paypal does all that for you with a very small transaction fee on your end only, your customer just pays your price.
And your customer does not have to join Paypal to buy your product through paypal.

that wasn't what i had in mind, but i guess that works just fine. I have a friend who wants to set it up like a professional store like how newegg does theirs'. But I guess that works just fine.


By the way venney, when did you became a moderator? If i remember corretly, you were never a moderator before. hmmmmmmm oh well.

I have used both OScommerce and Cubecart, both of these have everything you would need for an online store.
Both have a large number of payment gateways to all the big online credit processors and paypal.

I found Oscommerce a little cumbersome but it handled everything out of the box.
It took quite some time to get it all setup and working.

Cubecart was a lot easier to setup and use but I had to write my own state tax module.
