Postby Dave_Lethal » Sat Dec 03, 2005 1:29 am

Still no success in getting any Windows Updates even after two emails from Microsoft. I'm still waiting it out. In the mean time, popups have returned. Here is a new HJT log if someone would be so kind as to check it for me. Thanks.

I really don’t see anything wrong with your HJT log.

Please download
Extract it to it’s own folder and then launch RootkitRevealer.
Click the scan button this will take several minutes to finish.
When complete click File click save now post the contents of the log back into this thread.

Ok, here it is. I'm still baffled as to why WMP starts on startup, I don't see any option for not having it run, and I don't see it listed in msconfig.

If you are you comfortable with running regedit then we can fix this right now.
If not then I will write a reg fix file that will do it for you later.

Please download unzip it but do not run it yet.

Press Ctrl/Alt/Del and "End Task" or "End Process" on each of the following they may not be there:
grihhv.exe
ibm00002.exe

Start > run > type regedit and press enter the registry editor will load
First backup the registry by selecting File > Export > name the file and save it.
Now in the left pain navigate to the following key:
HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Run

In the right pain delete the following:
Shell = "C:\Program Files\Common Files\Microsoft Shared\Web Folders\ibm00002.exe"
xp_system = C:\WINDOWS\inet20001\winlogon.exe

Now in the left pain navigate to the following key:
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\policies\Explorer\Run

In the right pain delete the following:
grihhv = C:\WINDOWS\System32\grihhv.exe
wmplayer = C:\Program Files\Windows Media Player\wmplayer.exe

Now using type the below into the text box:
C:\WINDOWS\inet20001\winlogon.exe

Now put a check next to 'End Explorer shell while killing file' click on the red X,
click yes, your desk top will go blank this is normal.

Now do the same for each of the following files/folders:
C:\WINDOWS\System32\grihhv.exe
C:\Program Files\Common Files\Microsoft Shared\Web Folders\ibm00002.exe

If you desktop does not come back in KillBox click Tools > Start Explorer shell

Reboot your system and see if we got it

Alright, I did everything that you posted.

For each file I tried to delete with killbox, it said "the file does not seem to exist"

So I rebooted, and WMP did not start up. I got 2 error messages for 2 of the registry keys that I deleted saying that the files could not run, which I'm assuming is good. I'm still getting popups when I have IE open, and I'm still unable to install any windows updates.

"Problem: A problem on your computer is preventing updates from being downloaded or installed"

However, the updates are already downloaded, they just won't install. I get "failed" on each and every one. There are about 26 of them, including XP SP2.

Also, AVG detected 4 viruses after I restarted, each of them I was able to heal.

I have another scan program to try and see if we can find the file.

Download L2mfix from one of these two locations:
http://www.atribune.org/downloads/l2mfix.exe
http://www.downloads.subratam.org/l2mfix.exe

Save the file to your desktop and double click l2mfix.exe.
Click the Install button to extract the files and follow the prompts, then open the newly added l2mfix folder on your desktop.
Double click l2mfix.bat and select option #1 for Run Find Log by typing 1 and then pressing enter.

This will scan your computer and it may appear nothing is happening, then, after a minute or 2, notepad will open with a log.
Copy the contents of that log and paste it into this thread.

IMPORTANT: Do NOT run option #2 OR any other files in the l2mfix folder until you are asked to do so!

Do you think it's a single file causing this problem with the windows updates?

Here's the log

Click Start, and then click Run, Type or copy the following line into the text box and click OK:
regsvr32 /u C:\WINDOWS\\system32\\MzPMSP.dll
do the same for:
regsvr32 /u C:\WINDOWS\\system32\\dfwsockx.dll

Next using Killbox type the below into the text box:
C:\WINDOWS\\system32\\MzPMSP.dll

Now put a check next to 'End Explorer shell while killing file' click on the red X,
click yes, your desk top will go blank this is normal.

Now do the same for each of the following files/folders:
C:\\WINDOWS\\system32\\dfwsockx.dll

If your desktop does not come back, in KillBox click Tools > Start Explorer shell

Now, empty all your TEMP Folders, Temporary Internet Files Folder and then empty your Recycle Bin, reboot and see if we got it.

For the command that you gave me to put in, it said the specified module could not be found. For the things you gave me to fix on Killbox, it said the file does not seem to exist.... :|

Sorry my bad, copy and paste and I didn't even read the path :(

Try these paths:

Click Start, and then click Run, Type or copy the following line into the text box and click OK:
regsvr32 /u C:\WINDOWS\system32\MzPMSP.dll
do the same for:
regsvr32 /u C:\WINDOWS\system32\dfwsockx.dll

Next using Killbox type the below into the text box:
C:\WINDOWS\system32\MzPMSP.dll

Now put a check next to 'End Explorer shell while killing file' click on the red X,
click yes, your desk top will go blank this is normal.

Now do the same for each of the following files/folders:
C:\WINDOWS\system32\dfwsockx.dll

If your desktop does not come back, in KillBox click Tools > Start Explorer shell

Now, empty all your TEMP Folders, Temporary Internet Files Folder and then empty your Recycle Bin, reboot and see if we got it.

Same thing :(

The specified module could not be found, and the file does not seem to exist.

If you were talking about the extra \ that was in there, I had already tried it without it.

These two entries look like a Look2me infection but you don’t have the guard.tmp file:
[HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\CLSID\{C59ED16C-F931-4470-B074-F49FB21E5BC4}\InprocServer32] @="C:\\WINDOWS\\system32\\MzPMSP.dll"
"ThreadingModel"="Apartment"

[HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\CLSID\{8783245B-674A-4D2F-B0E8-252EDB109FFA}\InprocServer32] @="C:\\WINDOWS\\system32\\dfwsockx.dll"
"ThreadingModel"="Apartment"

Maybe the guard.tmp has been deleted or you have a newer version.
So at this point I think we should try the l2mfix part 2.

{b]Close any programs you have open since this step requires a reboot.[/b]

From the l2mfix folder on your desktop, double click l2mfix.bat and select option #2 for Run Fix, by typing 2 and then pressing enter,
then press any key to reboot your computer. After a reboot, your desktop and icons will appear, then disappear (this is normal).
L2mfix will continue to scan your computer and when it's finished, notepad will open with a log.
Copy the contents of that log and paste it back into this thread, along with a new hijackthis log.

IMPORTANT: Do NOT run any other files in the l2mfix folder unless you are asked to do so!

Right after I did the l2mfix and rebooted my computer, an icon popped up saying that I have windows updates that are ready to install. So I was finally able to install them and get sp2 and all the windows updates. So I'm guessing everything is fixed now? Here's the stuff you wanted to see. Thank you.
