ATI Radeon 9600 XT Driver Errors

Postby Tatsumi888 » Fri Dec 30, 2005 6:38 am

Hey, I recently reformatted my computer and had to reinstall all the drivers for my hardware. Everything went fine until I was installing the drivers for my video card, an ATI Radeon 9600XT. First, I installed the driver through Windows Update and restarted my computer. When it got to the Windows XP Welcome Screen, I moved the mouse and the screen went black. I restarted a few times and got the same problem. So I did a system restore to before installing through Windows Update. Next I tried the driver from the disc my card came with. Same problem, so I restored again. Next, I went to ATI's website and downloaded their newest Radeon Driver... Same thing. I had this problem when I first built this PC a bit over a year ago. I fixed it by installing the driver that I found in Windows Update that time, but that doesn't seem to help this time. I am beginning to think that it is just a compatibility issue between my CPU and the card... Or that it's just a garbage card. If that is the case does anyone have any recomendations for a new card around the 100-200 dollar range for a card thats not an ATI?

Here's my setup:
AMD Athlon 64 2800+
AOpen AK86-L Motherboard
2x512mb PC3200 Ram
450w power supply
ATI 128mb Radeon 9600XT card
If any additional info is needed just ask

Thanks for all the help,

Check to make sure that the card is fully seated in its slot.

The second thing I would try, is to set the video to regular VGA in device manager and then reboot. Then try to reinstall the drivers for the card.

I recently found in my BIOS that there was a spot where I could set my primary graphics slot...

there was a choice of PCI and AGP... my MB was set to PCI and it was really messing with my system....

Might check that out...

Good luck
