Help my hard drive wont boot up and windows wont install!

I wanted to transfer data to another hard drive and i hooked it up as a slave drive to my main drive and the first time i booted it up it did nothing and then i restarted and and wouldnt boot and gave me the message

NTLRD is missing
Please press any key to restart

then i unhooked the second hard drive and rebooted and got the same message, i hooked the second drive up to its original machine and got the same message on it too. what is goin on hear now nothing will boot. please need help, i cant lose all that data on both hardrives!

I sacraficed the first hard drive and format it and then when i go to install windows xp on it at says

Fatal Error:
One of the components that Windows needs to continue setup could not be installed.

The parameter is incorrect.

Do you mean NTLDR? Create the file: NTLDR in the root of your C drive and try again. It would be C:\NTLDR (no extension)

I guess that's it's too late now but you can fix your error by

Inserting your Windows XP CD-ROM into the CD-ROM drive, and then restart the computer.

When the "Welcome to Setup" screen appears, press R to start the Recovery Console.
You must first type the number for your operating system and then press enter if you just press enter it will reboot the system
When you are prompted to do so, type the Administrator password. If the administrator password is blank, just press ENTER.
Now at the command prompt type “ bootcfg /rebuild ” (without the quotes)
This will rebuilt your NTLDR
Take out the CD and type exit at the command prompt.

what do i have to type to create the file C:\NTLDR at the command line?

ok i ran bootcfg /rebuild and it said to run chkdsk first and then chkdsk said the volume appears to have one or more unrecoverable problems. what does this mean

Is your computer booting to the reformatted drive first? (BIOS)
I've used a NTLDR dummy file in Win95 and Win98. If you want to try it, create a file in C:\NTLDR (no extension)
In MSDOS:
Run the MS-DOS editor: EDIT and create a dummy file NTLDR (no extension) in the root dir C:\
Not sure if this will fix your problem.....let us know.
