Delete the undeletable??

Postby ColaBoy » Mon Aug 29, 2005 12:46 am

Ive just downloaded a file called MBRTool and run it. Its one of those programs that does'nt get installed but just opens up a DOS windows and runs itself. Having used it,I was trying to backup my MBR, I then deleted it,except it did'nt delete. What happens is I get an alert box pop up and the message
'Cannot delete MBRtool: Its being used by another person or program. Close any programs the might be using this file and try again.'

As far as I can tell no program is using this. Ive run a virus scan but got the all clear plus my Firewall isnt reported any thing either. HELP!

Download Killbox from here
www.bleepingcomputer.com/files/killbox.php

Run Killbox, select the file you want to delete, and check the box to have the program remove the file on reboot.

There is probably a process running that is keeping you from deleting the file. Killbox should take care of this for you.

That program is a dos program, not really meant to be ran from windows. Its not a virus either.

Here's a manual removal you can do, its good practice
If you are familiar with command prompt you can delete it pretty easily. I'll try to explain it..

Click on Start > Run and type cmd then click ok

In the newly opened command prompt window, you will have to browse to the directory that has the file.

Example:If its in My Documents you will have to type

cd My Documents and press enter

Once you get to the right directory you need to press control-alt-del and end process on explorer.exe. This will leave you with only the command prompt window open. Now you can delete the file by typing del and the filename
Example: del MBRtool.exe
then press enter
now type explorer and press enter and your back in windows and the file is gone.

Now why did'nt I think of that. Easy or what! Many thanks, its gone now. One thing though,I did'nt have to 'press control-alt-del and end process on explorer.exe.' I just typed DEL MBRTOOL.EXE inside the correct directory. Why would I need to end all Explorer processes though?
