Virus, or just screwed up?

Postby Grizzlybear » Wed Aug 10, 2005 10:35 pm

Hi Guys,

As you can tell from the title of this thread, I've got a problem, and I'm hoping someone here can help.

I've got a pretty standard system: Win XP Home, Service Pack 2, IE6. Two computers networked together and sharing 1 cable internet connection.

Here's what's up: Last night, opening IE, instead of opening to Google, it opened to a blank page titled "About:Blank". 20 seconds later, IE closed itself. I ran Lavasoft Ad-aware 6.0 Personal and it came up with:

Started deep registry scan
¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯
Possible browser hijack attempt : Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\MainStart Pageabout:blank

Possible Browser Hijack attempt Object recognized!
Type : RegData
Data : "about:blank"
Category : Data Miner
Comment : Possible browser hijack attempt
Rootkey : HKEY_CURRENT_USER
Object : Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main
Value : Start Page
Data : "about:blank"

Possible browser hijack attempt : Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\MainStart Pageabout:blank

Possible Browser Hijack attempt Object recognized!
Type : RegData
Data : "about:blank"
Category : Data Miner
Comment : Possible browser hijack attempt
Rootkey : HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE
Object : Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main
Value : Start Page
Data : "about:blank"

I deleted them. Once deleted, IE now tries to open to:
http://www.microsoft.com/isapi/redir.dl ... .0&ar=home
but still closes after the 20 seconds or so.

I then ran Mcafee Virus Scan. It found 1 virus.

Type: Static
Location: C:\System Volume Information\_restore{717DED14-B9DD-4C52-8322-6043139687C5A}\RP1289
Size: 44
Virus Name: Adware-Sahagent.dll

I deleted that, too.

After a restart, IE did the same thing again. Went to About:Blank, then shut itself off after about 20 seconds. I tried my email, Outlook Express, and it also shut itself off after about 20 seconds. Fortunatly, I can still access the 'net via the other computer.

I looked up the virus at Mcafee's website (it says it's not actually a virus, but tracking software). According to Mcaffe, this bug is supposed to create HKey_Local_Machine\Software\VGroup, but it wasn't there.

I followed all the directions for removing it, but no luck. I flollowed the link to get the stand-alone uninstaller for it, and ran that. No luck. I did a search of all files created and modified yesterday, but didn't find anything I could positivily say was the bug.

Even after Mcafee and Ad-aware have deleted the files, neither IE nor Outlook Express will stay open, altho other programs which access the 'net (WinMX) will stay open and work. I've gone in in Safe Mode, run RegEdit to change the IE start page back to Google, done the same thru Control Panel/Internet Options. Even when IE tried to go to Google, it still shuts itself off and so does Outlook Express. After a restart, even with System Restore turned off, I'm right back to About:Blank and getting turned off.

I'm out of ideas to try. I figure the blasted thing has to have put itself somewhere in the registry somewhere, and is simply reinstalling itself at each start-up. But I just don't get having IE & OE still shutting down after I've deleted the bug.

I seriously need some help here. Anyone with a solution?

Bill

First, I would download HijackThis, there's a link at the top left of this page. Create a folder on your desktop called HijackThis and install the program into there. Do not install it to your desktop or your desktop will be cluttered with backups.

Run the program, click "None of the above, just start the scan" and when the scan finishes, cilck "Save Log". Copy and paste the log here so someone can check it for you. Do not attempt to make any changes in HiJackThis youself.

Also, I would download a program called About:Buster. You can get it here

http://www.malwarebytes.biz/

This SHOULD help your About:Blank problem.

Good luck.

OK, I downloaded the 2 programs, and did as you said. The About:Buster found 1 file, and did it's thing. But, IE & OE are still shutting down on me. Anyways, here's the Hijackthis log:

Please copy this to Notepad and print it. Make sure to work through the fixes in the exact order it is mentioned below. If there's anything that you don't understand, ask your question(s) before proceeding with the fixes.
You should not have any open windows when you are following the procedures below.

Press Ctrl/Alt/Del and "End Task" or "End Process" on each of the following:
(They may or may not be there)
NZSearch
minisearch

Turn off system restore by right clicking on My Computer and go to Properties->System Restore and check the box for Turn off System Restore. Click Apply and then OK. (Turn it back on after this is repaired and you've rebooted.)
Close all other open Windows and have HiJackThis Fix:

When you're done with this, if IE still closes itself, try this.

Go to Start>Control Panel>Add/Remove programs
Scroll down to Internet Explorer and click Change/Remove
On the menu that comes up, select "Repair"

If that doesn't work, you may want to download an alternate (and better, in my opinion) browser like Firefox and see if it still happens.

www.mozilla.org

IE isn't very secure anyway, and I would reccomend Firefox to anyone.

OK. I followed all the instructions to the letter. EXCEPT, NZSearch wasn't listed in the add/remove programs list.

There's no change in the puter. Both IE & Outlook Express still shut themselves off.

I also tried the advice from Dave: repair IE thru the add/remove panel. IE isn't listed in the program list.

Here's the new Hijackthis log:

Is there any type of error message when IE shuts down? Also, do you have all your windows updates and is IE up to date?

Also, did you download Firefox and see if it happens with that browser too?

Hi guys,

A little more info for you:

There are no error messages from either IE or OE when they shut down. They shut close. I've got Windows auto-updates, so everything is fully up to date.

There was no change when I tried what was in the repair tutorial.

I haven't downloaded FireFox yet, I'm saving that for a last resort.

Now, for a bit of info that may be significant:

Everything works right when running in Safe Mode with Networking. I ran About:Buster in Safe Mode (like it says to do) and both IE & Outlook Ex worked just fine. I did a restart to normal, and About:Blank was back and IE & OE shut down again. I then ran About:Buster in normal mode, and it had no effect.

So, whatever this is that's screwing up my puter, it's located someplace that isn't accessed/run in Safe Mode. Hopefully, that info will help to find the problem.

Which version of Java are you using?

Try uninstalling Microsoft's Java VM and installing the latest version of Java SUN.

1. From the Start menu, select Run.
2. Enter the command

RunDll32 advpack.dll,LaunchINFSection java.inf,UnInstall

to start the uninstall process
3. Click Yes to the confirmation, then select Reboot.
4. After the machine restarts, delete the following items:
* the \%systemroot%\java folder
* java.pnf from the \%systemroot%\inf folder
* jview.exe and wjview.exe from the \%systemroot%\system32 folder
* The HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Java VM registry subkey
* The HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\AdvancedOptions\JAVA_VM registry subkey (to remove the Microsoft Internet Explorer (IE) options)

Microsoft Java is now removed. You can download Sun's newer JVM for Windows at http://java.sun.com/getjava/index.html

It sounds like you have a hidden .dll file causing the problem.
Let’s see if we can find out what is run during startup.

Start HijackThis and click the “Open the misc tools section”.
Near the top, put a check next to “List also minor sections (full)”, now click “Generate Startuplist log”.
Copy and paste all the contents of the log into this post.

Dave,

I have no idea of which version of VM I've got.

I did download the Sum VM, but haven't had a chance to even install it yet, I got tied up with some other things.

Gecko,

I agree with you about a .dll hidden in there someplace. I had a virus a few months ago that also kept coming back on startup. Fortunately, that one was in Mcafee's database, and I got instructions for where to go to manually remove it. Whatever this thing is now, is no longer showing up on a virus scan.

OK, I did the Startup list in Hijack. I actually did 2, one I did with the puter in safe mode and then did another one in normal mode. There's a difference between the 2, so I figure it may help you to figure out my problem.

I'm pasting the SAFE MODE version first.

Try downloading
Download and run the program. When it is open, click on the Run Locate.com button. When that has completed, click on the compare button and then finally on the make log button. Post the contents of the resulting log back into this thread
