Firewall: Software or Router?

Postby c130fixr » Fri Dec 05, 2003 5:17 pm

Ok... I have another question. What is the best firewall overall that you can get for home use. And would it be better to run a router or a software firewall. Right now I'm using Norton Internet Security as my firewall in all my machines. It got pretty good ratings on GRC http://grc.com/lt/scoreboard.htm
But would it be better to go with a router? I have used a router in the past but it was such a hassle to set up all the ports for various things like online gaming, P2P, and FTP.

In my opinion a hardware firewall is better than a software firewall. But a software one is better than none. I, personally, run the router's firewall and "Panda's" software version. I do not run WinXp's firewall.

I'm with brad on this one - a hardware one adds a whole other layer of security that is missing from a software firewall. I also find them more configurable - once you've worked out the menus, they tend to work with other software much better than software ones :)
