can't open in MS-DOS

Are you using a floppy disk to boot from and then running the 98 cd? I'm not quite sure where you are at when you get the error

Reinstalling windows over the old O/S is not going to get rid of the spyware. If you download Hijackthis, see top left of this web page for a link, and post your hijack file in the Hijack forum, one of the other Mods can walk you through the cure.

Otherwise, you could format the drive and do a full install of Windows98. You would need a boot disk.

Booting windows up and then shuttiing down and exiting into dos mode, you're still in Windows technically. If you boot up and tap the f8 key untill you get the menu, you can select dos mode, but you won't have access to your cdrom
