This one has me a bit stumped. Is it all emails or just one?

It is all downloaded pictures- not photos which are sent in the body of the email (like from a friends camera), or those which I can save as attachments, which I can then open.

Weird, huh?

go to Start--> Settings-->Control Panel-->FolderOptions click the tab File Types

Scroll down to JPG and highlight it. Look in the details box and see what it opens with.

If it says Outlook Express, then that has to be changed to a picture viewer. I think you can select Internet Explorer and use that.

You could go to and install Picaso 2 a freebee--better than Photoshop Elements. Installing that program should reset your default file options back to more usuable settings.

I have checked thefile types, and .jpg and .jpeg are both opened with windows picture and fax viewer. This should allow me to view them, I think?

Windows picture and fax viewer is the default, no need to change it.

Here's a link to some Outlook Express settings that should solve the problem.

Notice in that link, the Outlook Express security settings have checked under

Block images and other external comtent in HTML format

Uncheck that box, close out of Outlook and open it back up, I should work as you want
