Major internet connection problem!

Postby inverso » Thu May 19, 2005 9:33 pm

Hi there guys!

I've been trying to find a solution to my problem for 2 days now and i bumped on your forums. So i thought i'd try. Anyways..

I connect to the internet with a 56k modem (until my DSL is activated hehe), and after a recent format of my C: disk i've been having a really weird problem. I connect to the internet as I did before, but after 10-20 minutes my connection is idle. MSN shuts down, explorer works offline etc. The weird thing is that I can't right click and disconnect. So I have to reset my computer :S:S If it makes any difference I have tried a list of initialization commands but its still the same. I use windows XP pro corp and every time i open the status window of my connection (before the idle thing takes place) I see in the "Received" section "Errors: 1". My modem drivers are up to date and my ISP tech support said that everything seems alright with my connection. Do you guys know if any settings might be wrong on my pc or something? :(

Thanks in advance.

It sounds like the modem is not hanging up when you get disconnected.
Have you tried picking up the phone for this line and see if you have a dial tone?
You could also try creating a Modemlog.txt file > Control Panel > Phone and Modem Options >
Modems tab, select your modem and then click Properties. On the Diagnostics tab, click the Record A Log File.
Now next time it happens you can view the Modemlog.txt and use to diagnose the log entries.

I don't have a phone on the same line, we're on an isdn line. Anyways, i created the modemlog and yes it seems like the modem doesn't hang up. Is the dial tone vital? Because i've un-checked the option "Wait for dial tone" in the modem settings. If this is not the problem where can I find extra info on how to actually make my modem hung up? :P

P.S. thanks a lot for your fast reply Gecko
