repair wireless connection (wpa) problems

Postby mikeUK » Wed May 04, 2005 3:33 pm

hi,

Background info....
I have a dlink g604t running wpa, a mac and a pc running windows xp sp2 with all the latest updates. The pc is running mcafee firewall latest version and the mac is running norton. The pc is using a belkin usb wireless adaptor and the mac is using an airport card. IP addresses are given to the computers via built in dhcp server in the router.

The problem....
I previously had wep encryption but have recently switched to WPA hex. The mac runs fine but the pc doesnt. From what I can see the IP address on the pc doesnt renew correctly on startup. The usb adapter comes on and sees the router, which is great. But the windows wireless network says "aquiring IP address and "invalid IP address". I have to press repair connection on the windows wireless icon everytime i start up windows. As soon as it gets to the "renewing your IP address", the internet comes to life and the IP address is correctly given via dhcp.

What I want to know is how to fix this error to get it working first time without having to click repair!

Sorry about the length of this query! Its best to have too much information rather than not enough!

Cheers in advance

Mike

Try removing the Mcafee firewall you don't need it with the router.

My mind grows suspicious.

Where did the Mcafee come from? AOL? :

One of our PCs, with a Linksys NIC talking to a Netgear AP has the same problem after switching to WPA. Using AVG for virus detection, not McAfee. Seems a little deeper (and less sinister)...

Anyone else seeing this?
