A virus from MSN

Postby Melv » Sat Apr 23, 2005 5:09 pm

This is the one spreading around atm and it's very irritating.

It goes something like this,

lol see this

the person who is receiving it email address on msn

I was talking to a mate and every 10 mins he sent me that message.

Any idea of how to get rid of it?

It seems the new MSN 7.0 is having a few problems. There have been cases where someone sends you a file and you save it to My Received Files in my documents. As soon as you open My Received files it is a self extracting dos command prompt. Best thing to do with MSN 7.0 is dont accept anything until they fix the problem

I love MSN and have had no problems with 7.0. I think that the problem lies with people ( quite rightly ) have friends on their contacts list that they don't know very well. If you know your friends well then you know that they have just sent you a file and you know what it contains.
I think it's a problem not with the new MSN but one that has always existed and has now been exploited.... the fact that people are click happy especially when they think they may see a picture etc that interests them.
I think the golden rule here is DON'T click to receive just anything.... and ask the person who sent the file to verify that it is genuine before you go ahead.
I think it's becoming the rule nowadays that you trust no one or anything.... you check it out first.

Msn is a harmless thing ..... as long as you treat it with the same caution as you hopefully do while you are surfing.

I have to agree. Email has become the same situation Even though you know the name the email comes from, you can't always trust it.

I had a thing that I hated MSN and would never install it. I was convinced one day and now I couldn't live without it. And I have run the beta from the beginning and run 7.0 now. I have never ever got any viruses from anyone on it. And I have quite a long list of people on it.

Always be cautious. But don't blame MSN. :)

I like my msn too, the sad thing is I got the command prompt thing from my mother, now not that Im crazy or anything but I do have a tendancy to trust my mom. I didnt think there should be a reason to suspect anything coming from her. After asking her about it she told me she did not send me anything on msn, so it came from somewhere else.

But you asked her about it :) That was the most important thing you did.... and I'm guessing that you suspected that your mother didn't send you the file because of its content.
It's harder to do with mere acquaintances because we don't know what they are going to send.... we should always check it out before we click to accept.

Here is some text taken from a site I went to when I did a search for MSN 7.0 vulnerabilities

s in February, Microsoft also published critical patches for Microsoft Office and MSN Messenger. Two bulletins dealt with bugs in Word and in Microsoft's MSN Messenger 6.2.

MS05-022 takes care of a loose screw in the latter, which stumbles when asked to process an improperly-sized GIF image or emoticon. Hackers could send such images via IM, and snatch control of the PC, said Microsoft.

One advantage for early adopters is that the just released v. 7.0 of Messenger is immune to the flaw. (Oddly enough, however, users of the beta version of MSN Messenger 7.0 are at risk, and should upgrade as soon as possible.)

Here too is something from Symantec

http://sarc.com/avcenter/security/Content/13114.html

This was just one of the vulnerabilities, there was 18 found in total and patches made for them
