VERY slow Server 2003 shutdown

Once I initiate a shutdown my server goes to the "windows is shutting down" screen and stays there for 8-9 minutes before shutting down. There is very little hard drive activity durring this time... what could be going on? Any suggestions?

went through the event log and i had red x errors at shutdown time for MSexchange... i just disabled all msexchange services (i don't use them) and it now goes down in 2 mins and 15 seconds... much better than 8-10 minutes.

2 mins and 15 secs still seemed too long so I looked around on the web and found a site that poined to

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\System\CurrentControlSet\Control - value WaitToKillServiceTimeout. Was set to 60,000 miliseconds or 60 seconds as a timeout for EACH service. I set it to 2,000 (2 seconds) and have re-booted many times since without ANY issues. And get this.. shutdown time is now about 25 seconds total.

Not bad going from 10 minutes to 25 seconds overall. I am EXTREMELY pleased with shutdown time now.

Why it matters
1.) i re-boot often
2.) I use MBM to monitor my fan speeds.. if the CPU or Power Supply fan would happen to fail, i'd want to shut down very quickly.. 10 minutes would have been enough to ruin my hardware... 25-30 seconds it would get hot, but probably would live to see another day (after I replaced the fan)

glad to hear you got it fixed - I might be a bit worried though that I'd be killing rpocesses that aren't hung but are just taking a bit of time to close themselves down?
