How would I go about disabling my Norton SystemWorks/Antivirus/Utilities ? I cannot seem to find out how from the Symantic website. Needing to do this, before I do a reinstall over top of Windows. Thanks for all your help.....Snake420.

Start > Run > type > msconfig and click OK
Startup Tab > uncheck anything to do with symantic or Norton
Click Apply > click OK > click yes to reboot now.

When windows restarts click the box for Don’t show this message again > click OK

Another Question .......
My Norton protection is disabled, and I'm going to reinstall Win98 over top of itself. I am going about it by the faster way, by typing in from COMMAND: SETUP /P F
I was told this replaces the bad areas of my Win98, rather than doing a full reinstall over top.
Here's my question.......when it gets into the Setup, it asks me where I want my CAB Files to go ? I was told not to send them to C:\Windows.000 , but use Other, and on the next screen type in C:\Windows . Yes ? .....but, My existing Win98 CABS are in C:\Win98 on my system. What should I do ??

the Setup /P f Creates a new Registry and ignores the current Registry. Note the space between the P and f.

Windows 98 is not going to ask you where to put the CAB files. The question you will get, is where the new install goes. You want it to go over the c:\windows directory. Not windows.000

IF you do not pick the original windows directory, all of your programs will have to be reinstalled.

If you are familiar with the CAB file folder, you should be able to boot with a floppy into dos and go to the CAB directory (usually labeled Win98) and run the windows setup from there.

On a new install if it is done right, you copy the Win98 directory off of the cd onto the hard drive and run setup from the Hard drive. This elimimates the nag for the install cd and allows you more freedom with the system.

FYI Windows 98 will not copy the cab files to the hard drive when you install from the cd. This has to be done manually.

Its also very important that any virus scan program be disabled--you have the right idea there.

I hope you have a chance to read this before you do your install.

Make sure you have the product key, if you don't, it can be retrieved from the current system. PM me and I'll email you the tool.

In Internet explorer, export your favorites and cookies--to any directory except c:\windows. They're going poof.

Any folders that exist on the desktop, move to any directory except c:\windows. Microsoft buried the desktop in the c:\windows folder and we know what happening to that. Outlook express has to be exported to Outlook if you have it, that also gets toasted.

Copy down all of your dial up settings and network settings--they will be gone.

Uninstall the virus scan software if you are going to run setup /P f. It won't work after you do the install and you might not be able to remove it if you want to reinstall it (catch 22). Your virus scan loads from the registry before the WIndows splash screen. Toast the registry and Norton will not know how to load let alone load.

The last step we would do, is go into dos and rename c:\win.com something like win.old. This makes the install run a bit smoother and if you have a problem, its still there and hasn't been overwritten. Skipping this step might save you from having to know the product key for your cd.
