rebuilt pc - trying to upgrade to Windows XP

Postby kountzer » Tue Nov 11, 2003 3:31 pm

Hello all,

I don't know whether this is a windows 98 question, or hardware, or window xp, but here goes: we bought this pc 3 years or so ago, it is a gateway with amd 700 processor. The OS is windows 98.

I recently bought a new athlon processor, a 1800 I think, along with an ECS motherboard (mistake, but too late now), along with an antec atx case, from Fry's electronics. I also got a new sony cd rw, a video card and windows xp upgrade.

I installed the board, cpu, cd, and video card into the case. It works.

Now I am trying to install windows xp. However, I keep getting these error msgs, one is : 5A3FF58h, another is 637FF58h.

Anyone have an idea what those error messages mean, and what might be the problem with my system?

Is this error message during the installation? And is the instllation a fresh install rather than an upgrade?

How much RAM is installed?

Is the RAM configured properly in BIOS?

Win XP installation is problematic with small amount of RAM.
Also, try manually configuring RAM in BIOS; include Bus speed, CL setting etc.

Good Luck
