XP - HJT 1.99.1 and BROPIA/MSN CHAT VIRUS :(

Postby CanadianTek » Tue Mar 08, 2005 12:43 pm

Hey folks..

Trying to help my friend cindy.. she's almost in tears.. as yet another day goes by.. and she further alienates her friends.. on her MSN Chat pal's list.

She has called me 4 or 5 times now.. as i walk her thru a few steps on cleaning out her msconfig, her add/remove programs.. etc..
.........but the long distance is killing her..

the only connectivity we have is via msn chat.. her internet is down, her email is down

Yes.. something in her system - is sending out to every contact on her list FAKE pictures.. etc.. (named: Jennifer Lopez.scr and/or Topless in a mini Skirt ! LoL)

I know this is a relatively new phenomenon.... msn viruses..

Went to the symantec sight.. - it says its Bropia.j

soooooooooooo in both normal mode and safe mode...

i had her run... fxbropia - and it has pulled up nothing :(

sooo i had her manually go thru looking for any of these files.. (as described on the symantec page.. but none of them existed on her system.. )

LOL.scr
Webcam.pif
bedroom-thongs.pif
naked_drunk.pif
LMAO.pif
ROFL.pif
underware.pif
Hot.pif
new_webcam.pif

along with sexy.jpg and winhost

None..

Here is her HJT file..

Will she be able to run an online virus scan ? There is a link Housecall Free Virus scan in the top lefthandside of the screen.

She looks like she's got serbw.exe.... and some interesting reading about it (there is a second page too). Seems it may be removed by a virus scanner, with a bit of luck. You should try that first.

But before she does that, she should get rid of all those hostfiles using Hijackthis, all the ones you listed , yes they need to go. Hopefully there's a chance of a virus scan running when they have gone.

It's best not to reboot after using the Hijackthis in case they all spring back again before a virus scan has had chance to run.
