Video card..

Postby tasmo3 » Thu Feb 03, 2005 4:08 am

Trying to load Windows 2000 Pro on a Gateway G6-333 Unit. It has a PII 333MHz
processor with 256 MB Ram. When I got through with the installation, noticed
the display was only 16 colors and 480x640 resolution. Could not change it so checked device manager and saw the video card had not loaded. When I tried do a drivers download from Gateway, system said the card was not compatible with the new operating system. The card is a STB 4 MB AGP.

Is this a common problem when up dating Operating Systems? Anything I can do
about it beside replacing the video card?

That is a pretty old card, some quick Google searches pretty much says that the drivers are not supported under Win 2k. Since, judging by the specs that machine will be for office work, general browsing and e-mail I would spend the 15 or 20 bucks for a new low end card.

Thanks for the reply.

Noticed a small wire from the CD player and a jumper wire from the sound card is
attached to this card. Is this a normal set up? I've looked at a few cards at Tiger
Direct but do not see where these wires would attach...

The old Gateways had legacy cards which were all in one type of things. Sound and video mixed. You won't find one like that any more. It will be rather tough to find parts to really old systems like this. :(

You could install Linux on it, it's not a guarantee but it's certainly worth a try. Linux is great for reviving older systems, especially since the primary function of this box and again I'm assuming will be internet, office and e-mail. I would suggest "Suse 9.1Personal" as it only requires 1 cd to install from, it's free and it comes bundled with MS compatible office apps, web browsers and mail clients.

Here are a couple of sites to choose from, which ever is faster for you. Once you download the .iso image you have to "burn the image to disc". Note, this does not mean make a "data cd". Open your cd burning program and you should be able to find out how to burn an .iso. Once that is done make sure your bios is set to boot from the cd rom drive and "happy Linux installing". :)
