Have you tried repairing Internet Explorer?

Goto Start > Control Panel > Add or remover programs >
Select Internet Explorer and the select repair.

You could also just use Firefox for good
in Firefox Select Tools > Options > Delault Browser section >
Check Now button

I prefer Firefox than IE because of its security issues and IE vulnerabilities... but lots of websites on the net are still not compatible with firefox and they look wierd on FF. Firefox still need to improve alot. I use maxthon too

Don't try removing internet explorer-- when you use the remove option, you are offered a repair option. Thats the purpose of that suggestion. If you are sucessful in removing it, your desktop could be blank on reboot  . Look to the left of the items in add remove and you'll see an icon "add remove windows components."

Limp suggested a program called Deepnet

which seems even better than firefox--the only drawback to me using it is that it won't allow the google tool bar :(
