Yes there is a registry fix for this problem but you must use Regedit to edit the registry.
First you should backup your registry
Click start, click run, type “regedit” (without the quotes) click ok.
Now click on file select export you will now need to select where you want this saved and what you want to name it then click ok you have now backup your registry.
Now to repair the problem, while still in regedit in the left panel click the plus sign next to “Hkey_Classes_Root”, scroll down until you see the folder “.gif” click on this folder.
Now in the right panel right click on the entry and select “Modify” in the pop-up window the Value: has to be “default” (without the quotes) and the Data: has to be "giffile" (without the quotes) Now exit regedit saving when prompt to do so.
You should now be able to find .gif in the File types selection window.

Ok...beleive it or not I ran the Internet Explorer Repair tool

START/PROGRAMS/ACCESSORIES/SYSTEM TOOLS/SYSTEM INFORMATION/TOOLS

And that fixed it...

I'm not even going to try to guess at what was the cause.
Thanks for the help!!

There is one more thing the it could be, in the File Types window click the New Type button, in the Associated extention field type".gif" (without quotes) now click the OK button this will either add the file extention or give you a pop-up with the name of the program already associated with .gif
If you get the pop-up post back here with the name of the associated program and I will walk you through how to change it.
