netstat(??)

Postby ColaBoy » Sun Nov 28, 2004 5:24 pm

I have a friend who likes to pop over and 'do' things to my pc that he has learnt or read about and which I know nothing about. He opened up a DOS command line and typed in the following commands which produced a list of info about my internet connection. Could someone explain what these commands show?

netstat

netstat -ano

netstat just shows all active connections, and who those connections are to. If you view a webpage & then run netstat you will see the connection to that server listed. Likewise if you run MSN messenger, you will see a connection to the MSN servers.

Running it with the -ano switches displays all connections (a), displays everything in numerical form - i.e. using ip addresses instead of host names (n) and displays the PID of the owning process (o) - you can use taskmanager to see what PID correspoonds to which program. I.e. the connection to a web page would be owned by IE (or whatever browser you own).
