XP has a known agravating issue. When explorer crashes and the screen refreshes, half of the system tray icons disappear--the programs are still running. The only way I know to get them back is with a hard boot (shut down completely and boot up). A warm boot won't bring them back.

Try this...

1) hold ctrl alt + del to bring up task manager
2) Click "New Task" under the "Applications" tab
3) Type in the box C:\WINDOWS\explorer.exe and press enter
